From Republican exile to democratic transition: a historical appraisal
Les universités, les laboratoires de recherche et les enseignants-chercheurs réalisent depuis plusieurs années un travail d’histoire sur l’exil républicain. Un exil qui a marqué un tournant dans l’histoire de l’Espagne mais aussi des pays ayant accueilli des réfugiés politiques en 1939. Cette année de commémoration est l’occasion pour la recherche de faire le point sur l’enrichissement des connaissances ainsi que sur notre compréhension de l’événement et de ses implications sur le long terme, en Espagne comme ailleurs. L’exil républicain espagnol a été abordé et étudié par diverses disciplines et avec une intensité peu commune, depuis vingt ans, par l’histoire. Cette historiographie a un caractère international lié à la nature de l’événement qui est à la source de l’exil : la guerre d’Espagne (1936-1939).

Participation in public life from Antiquity to the end of the 3rd Republic
Iuris Historia Network
L'association « Réseau Iuris Historia », composée de doctorants en histoire du droit et des institutions politiques de la faculté d'Aix en Provence organise son premier colloque. Cette première recontre portera sur la participation à la chose publique de l'Antiquité à la IIIème République. Cette manifestation réservée aux doctorants et docteurs récemment diplômés, a pour vocation d’offrir à de jeunes chercheurs, quelle que soit leur spécialisation juridique, la possibilité de se rencontrer et d’échanger sur des thèmes variés. Face à une dénonciation de plus en plus explicite d’un déficit démocratique des décisions politiques, la revendication du vote obligatoire est remise en lumière à l’heure où, paradoxalement, l’abstention grandissante semble former une nouvelle forme d’expression aux élections nationales. Ainsi, la question de la participation à la chose publique, au cœur de l’actualité, constitue une thématique déterminante depuis l’Antiquité. Ce large sujet a pour vocation de donner aux doctorants et jeunes docteurs des pistes de réflexion étendues sur la manière dont les hommes ont désigné, influencé ou encore interagi avec le pouvoir politique de l’Antiquité au début du 20ème siècle.

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

The II International Colloquium detention, exile and deportation in the Portuguese colonial Empire. Places of history and memory aims to look at these institutions in a multiplicity of approaches and dimensions in the long period between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth century, continuing the International Colloquium, held in 2016 in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores.

Keynote to the Crossroads of Critique doctoral conference
The Sciences Po Graduate Conference in Political Theory 2019 is dedicated to the thought of Axel Honneth and the 'Frankfurt School Project' of critical theory. Over the last three decades, Axel Honneth has played a crucial role in giving new life to the post-Kantian tradition. As the leading voice of the Frankfurt School after Habermas, his work has been responsible for renewed interest in critical theory. His early engagement with Foucault, his turn to Hegel's notion of recognition for a new social theory as well as, more recently, Honneth's work on the institutional conditions of a 'democratic ethical life,' and, finally, his reappraisal of 'social freedom' as the normative idea of the socialist tradition represent only some of the most remarkable contributions he has made to contemporary theorizing.

Left-wing radicalism in the United States: a foreign creed?
Special Issue, “Transatlantica” (journal of American Studies)
This Transatlantica issue will analyze the way in which the construction of radicalism as foreign to US-American identity was received by radicals themselves, to see how they reacted to the branding of their beliefs as un-American, and how they devised counter-discourses in order to Americanize their ideas, sometimes leading to conflict and contradiction. How can the language of patriotism be combined with a belief in internationalism ? What coalitions, what political alliances can be built while maintaining a revolutionary stance ? How can the class struggle be rooted in a discourse on US-American society without succumbing to the sirens of exceptionalism ?

State-building, social movements and political economy
Modernity was marked by the edification of increasingly complex and sophisticated state system, committed to governing territories and populations, through a multiplicity of administrative, fiscal, police and judicial networks. At the same time, new mechanisms for legitimizing political power emerged, based on the building of a public sphere and the dissemination of different forms of collective organization and mobilization: from associations to petitions, from political demonstrations to strikes and riots. Finally, a new regime of production and consumption was created in the form of a Political Economy directed to the creation of markets, the movement of goods and the accumulation of capital.

L’objet de ce colloque est de saisir comment les alternances critiques s’articulent à la reproduction des dominations ordinaires en Amérique latine. Plus précisément, nous nous questionnons sur la manière dont ces alternances s’accommodent, se nourrissent, invisibilisent et redéploient sous d’autres formes, des structures sociales inégalitaires et excluantes, bien que leurs partisans et adversaires les envisagent généralement comme synonymes de changement social.

The war of 1870, a European conflict, a global conflict
À l’occasion du cent-cinquantenaire de la guerre de 1870, l’EA 3400 Arts Civilisation et Histoire de l’Europe de l’Université de Strasbourg organisera un colloque international qui se tiendra au palais Universitaire, du 6 au 8 février 2020. Depuis une trentaine d’années, le conflit franco-allemand de 1870 a surtout préoccupé les historiens à travers ses enjeux de mémoire, son approche par l’historiographie de la Troisième République et, plus rarement, dans la continuité des recherches de Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau (1989), dans une perspective d’histoire et d’anthropologie culturelles de la guerre. L’approche privilégiée par la rencontre de Strasbourg sera davantage celle des répercussions, échos et appropriations internationales du conflit franco-allemand.

Counter-enlightenment, Revolution and Dissent
Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence / PJCV
Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

Des révolutions de 1848 et du « printemps des peuples », tout semble avoir été dit. On en connaît les chronologies, les discontinuités, les espoirs, les luttes, les flux et les reflux. La dimension transnationale de la « plus européenne des révolutions du XIXe siècle » a été maintes fois soulignée. Pourtant, alors que l’âge des révolutions (années 1770-1840) est de plus en plus pensé à l’échelle globale, et que la domination coloniale et informelle de l’Europe croît dans la première moitié du siècle, la dimension globale de 1848 reste relativement méconnue. Ce colloque international, qui coïncide avec le 170e anniversaire de la Révolution de 1848, entend faire le point sur les dimensions coloniale, impériale et globale du moment révolutionnaire qui entoure 1848. Aussi entend-il exhumer et identifier les « mondes de 1848 », dans leur pluralité.

Interrogating the Legacy and Memory of the 1969 Riots
Les émeutes de Stonewall font l’objet de mémoires conflictuelles. À l’occasion du cinquantenaire de Stonewall, ce colloque se propose de porter un regard critique et distancié sur cet événement majeur et ses suites dans la constitution des mobilisations LGBTQ. Il a pour but d’interroger les processus de mémorialisation, l’héritage politique ainsi que les représentations culturelles et militantes de Stonewall. Les propositions émanant de toutes les disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales et des groupes et espaces militants concernés sont les bienvenues. Seront particulièrement bienvenues les communications s’appuyant sur un matériau empirique (archives, entretiens, ethnographie, productions culturelles – littérature, théâtre, cinéma, séries télévisées, bandes dessinées, chansons, etc.), comparatistes et/ou inscrites dans une perspective intersectionnelle.

Quel poids représente l'appartenance à la Francophonie par rapport aux engagements dans les processus d'intégration régionale ?

The panel will examine the practices and themes of Libyan resistance, defined as the concrete expression of the dialectical tension between the political and institutional centers of power and the social movements, group actors, or individuals that opposed them, covering the chronological span from the Ottoman reconquest in 1835 to the Jamāhīriyya’s fall in 2011.
