Online Course on the US Original Constitution and its Reception in Brazil
In times of Covid19, the Federal University of Paraiba, UFPB, opens this course to the global audience. Students from the world will have the opportunity to discuss the USA and Brazil's constitutional history from the Founding Era to the end of the nineteenth century with an instructor and Brazilian students of its Graduate Program in Law. The UFPB offers these lectures through the Google Meet platform with a limited number of spots for better development of the studies and discussions amongst participants. Some international scholars will take part in the course as special guests presenting seminars about their newly published books or legal articles in which they are authors on subjects connected to constitutional matters. 100% online course.

Ce colloque international se fixe comme objectif de faire revivre ces hauts-lieux d’une culture populaire dans les sociétés européennes, méditerranéennes et nord-américaines, pour une période qui s’étend du milieu du XVIIIe siècle jusqu’aux débuts du XXe siècle. De nombreuses questions se posent dans ce contexte, en commençant par la nature des établissements eux-mêmes et leur inscription dans la ville ou le village : que savons-nous de la topographie des cafés, tavernes, etc. (leur densité, leur rapport à l’espace religieux, sportif à la fin du XIXe siècle…), de leur architecture et de leur décoration, et de la figure du tavernier et cafetier elle-même, susceptible de revêtir un rôle important au niveau social et politique, mais aussi économique en tant qu’entrepreneur de divertissements ?

It may be argued that any frontier is the expression of what is discontinuous, of the existence of an ‘inside’ and of an ‘outside’, in short, that a frontier is an attempt to keep the ‘other’ at bay, whatever the meaning of the term – a given geographical territory, or a specific political entity, or a different culture, or else all of these put together. These considerations are in tune with the etymological origin of the word ‘frontier’ itself, i.e. anything that helps a group of people ‘develop a united front’. Examples abound, from the so-called ‘natural’ frontier of this or that country to Brexit, to the wall that President Trump has set out to build between his own country and Mexico.

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXIe siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

En refusant d’entendre la parole scientifique et en tentant de décrédibiliser le discours écologiste volontiers tronqué ou caricaturé, l’humanité, l’Amérique en tête, pose nettement la question d’une planète où l’être humain n’aurait plus sa place et serait, finalement, condamné à disparaître comme tant d’autres espèces avant lui. Une autre histoire nous attend donc. Après l’anthropocène et le triomphe du génie industriel, une période où la faune et la flore, débarrassées de leur principal adversaire, pourrait de nouveau croître, augmenter, et évoluer vers de nouvelles formes par le biais de facteurs endogènes ou exogènes. Loin d’une fin du monde annoncée, cette période post-historique, par définition post-humaine, amène de nombreux auteurs à s’interroger sur la place de l’homme sur notre planète.

Or is it something that is forever unreachable, something that defines our experience of the present as a perpetual state of deferral and transience?

The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

ILA conference: Here, there and elsewhere: the Americas and trans-imperial, trans-colonial and trans-national mobilities in the Americas (16th-21st centuries)
Le projet exploratoire ILA s’inscrit dans les démarches innovantes autour de la notion du « transtionalisme » développées par les études des migrations, en lien avec les recherches transatlantiques (Atlantic History) et l’histoire mondiale (Global History), particulièrement actives depuis ces deux dernières décennies. De nombreux travaux et projets comparatifs ont vu le jour entre spécialistes de ce que l’on a appelé l’histoire « coloniale », l’histoire des empires, l’histoire des constructions nationales (nation building) et les migration studies. Fort de ces approches, le projet ILA entend expertiser, avec une dimension résolument interdisciplinaire, les différentes acceptions de la notion de transnationalisme – notion dont la portée reste encore à déterminer –, afin d’étudier son impact sur la construction des Amériques de la période moderne à la période contemporaine.

W. E. B. Du Bois, Scholar, Activist and Passeur between America, Europe and Africa
Foundations, Circulations and Legacies
Trained in Classical languages (Latin and Greek), Philosophy, Sociology and History, both in the US and Europe, W. E. B. Du Bois’s intellectual inquiry into the nature of Blackness covers a wide range of disciplines, from History to Political Philosophy, from Sociology to Literature and Poetry, from Art Criticism to Musicology. The colloquium will embrace this multiplicity of approaches which characterizes Du Bois’s work and, at the same time, capture the profound unity of his thought which can be found in the analysis of the “concept of race.” Special attention will also be given to the determinant role played by W. E. B. Du Bois in the transatlantic circulation of knowledge and intellectual commerce between the US, Europe and Africa.

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.
