74e congrès de l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française

Pour cette édition, le congrès de l’Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française réfléchira à la manière dont l'Amérique française a été façonnée par les rapports entre les gens qui y ont été englobés, qu’ils s’y soient identifiés ou non. Le congrès explorera toute la gamme des interactions entre les gens en Amérique française, qu’il s’agisse de contacts, de conflits ou de collaborations, d’alliances ou de rivalités, de vivre ensemble harmonieux ou de voisinages refusés, de métissages culturels ou de replis identitaires. Penser en termes de « gens » permet de tenir compte des différentes échelles d’interaction, des individus et des familles jusqu’aux peuples et aux nations, en passant par les communautés et les groupes sociaux.

What is the legacy of the hegemonic pursuits of warlords that were drafted from among the Viking raiders, the German knights, the Scandinavian and Polish kings, and the Russian tsars and leaders on Baltic Sea Region and Scandinavia? In what ways was the region redesigned on the political, ideological, geographical, and cultural levels? Whether hegemony is defined in terms of political assertion or influence, especially by one country over other nations, masculinity, international leadership, regional hegemony, ideological hegemony, or hegemonic contestation, the term always connotes control, hierarchy, and dependency. What traces of their attempts have been left in culture, art, and public monuments throughout the course of time, and how are they considered in modern times ?

Les premières relations nouées entre l’été 1940 et la fin de l’année 1941 entre les deux formes de résistance qui se développent en France de façon parallèle au départ, la résistance extérieure (la France libre à Londres) et la résistance intérieure, constituent un angle mort de l’historiographie. Ce colloque consiste donc à étudier cette question des relations nouées de part et d’autre de la Manche entre les deux résistances (missions, premiers contacts et premières liaisons) avant que ne débute la mission confiée par le général de Gaulle à Jean Moulin pour unifier la Résistance française et la placer sous sa seule autorité.

Dining at the Castle in Europe, from Past to Present

Beyond a better understanding of what made the refinement and the magnificence of the royal and princely tables in Europe in the past, we will examine the question of the safeguard, the transmission and the promotion of the European cultural heritage of dinner at the castle. It is both the heritage of a social practice featuring the economic or political power of European elites as well as a ritual and a ceremonial of a bygone era. Dining at the castle also corresponds to a contemporary diplomatic practice (such as the State dinners at the Château de Versailles), to a cultural and festive gastronomic experience associated with tourist practices, or even to a literary theme or an artistic and cinematographic motif which builds its imagination in European culture.

A Transatlantic Mediterranean?

Circulations, influences and civilian and military cooperation between the United States and Southern European and Turkish spaces (1945-1980's)

The objective of this meeting is to contribute to a transnational and decompartmentalized history of the circulations between Mediterranean Europe and the United States between 1945 and the 1980s, which will make it possible to apprehend these relations from a global point of view and to analyze the way in which these links were able to generate circulations of influence between Mediterranean countries. The aim is to combine diplomatic approaches with the socio-history of these actors and with the analysis of the circulation of knowledge and modes of governmentality, by placing Atlantic military issues and policies in the wider context of intellectual mobility and cross-practices. The European and Turkish Mediterranean is understood here in a broad and political sense, from Portugal to the confines of the Anatolian peninsula. Similarly, the ambition is to see how these relations between Mediterranean Europe and the Atlantic space may have had effects on the Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, whether during or after the period of colonial domination.

Careers in politics, politics as a career

Developments in 19th and early 20th century Europe

During the nineteenth century, the field of European politics witnessed a host of significant changes, prominent among them being the increasing tendency towards its professionalization. Against the backdrop of major social and cultural shifts, politics ceased to be exclusively regarded as the traditional elite’s ‘duty of honor’ and opened its doors, first to the middle class and then, with the extension of the franchise, to lower social and professional strata. The aim of our workshop is to follow how politics became not only a stand-alone profession, but also part and parcel of careers in other professional fields during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We are interested in the factors underlying this process, in how it manifested in different European spaces and under different historical conditions, as well as in its outcomes and societal impact.

The Hanse and the Atlantic 1300–1500 actors, trade, and conflicts

The merchants of the German Hanse – a commercial association active from the middle of the 14th century – are mentioned at the end of the Middle Ages all around the North and Baltic Seas, where they dominated trade for a long time. However, although the presence and activity of the Hanse in the Atlantic area is well documented, it remains little studied in historiography. In the case of France, the lack of scientific cooperation with Germany at the end of the 19th century, when major German publishing programmes resulted in the publication of the main editions of Hanse sources, led to a serious lack of representation of French archives in these collections, which are still used assiduously by German researchers.

Insecurity in the Age of Labour Formalisation: Informal Work in Europe

1870–1970

Free wage labour is commonly presented as the focus, if not the very core, of the history of labour in Europe in the 19^th and 20^th centuries. The conference aims to challenge this narrative by focusing on multiple forms and fields of informal work. The conference will explore the insecurity of informal work. It will ask how widespread in Europe was the unregulated employment that can be described as insecure in the very century generally regarded as the era of increasingly formalised labour, and will consider which factors were thereby decisive. Thus, the focus will not be on the hard-won rise and safeguarding of free-wage labour, already so frequently examined in labour history. Rather, the spotlight will be on how the insecurity associated with informal work was not only tacitly but also quite openly accepted, or even actively promoted. The conference will also investigate the social and political conflicts that accompanied this recurrent phenomenon.

Premier rendez-vous d’histoire coloniale

Le Groupe de recherches sur les ordres coloniaux (GROC) organise un rendez-vous d’histoire coloniale. L’objectif de ce colloque est de réinvestir la question de la domination, liant l’étude des interactions micro à leurs dispositions globales. La production et la reconduction des dominations coloniales dans les interactions entre acteurs·trices seront particulièrement questionnées. Les notions d’hybridation et de capacités d'agir seront réintérrogées à l’aune de la question de la domination en les considérant comme des pratiques aux cadres contraints. Les études sur les interactions (incarnées par les Colonial Studies) et les perspectives critiques de la domination ont en effet tendance à rester sourdes les unes aux autres. Or, ces interactions, au cœur des rapports de domination impériaux, sont constitutives des positions de colonisateur·trice(s) et de colonisé·e(s).

Avec Bolsonaro, Erdogan, Poutine, Orbán ou Trump, le retour des « hommes forts » confronte notre actualité à une réalité qui semblait appartenir au passé : le populisme. De la France des Lumières à la Russie des Narodniki, des États-Unis du People’s Party à l’Amérique latine d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, la journée de la Société d’histoire moderne & contemporaine (SHMC) entend dessiner une cartographie des configurations populistes dans le but d’en permettre la comparaison dans la longue durée. Elle voudrait ainsi mettre en perspective et à l’épreuve le concept de populisme pour en mieux saisir la trajectoire historique, la variabilité et les tensions constitutives. Cette table ronde donnera lieu à un dossier spécial à paraître dans la Revue d’histoire moderne & contemporaine avec les intervenants.

L’objet de cette journée d’étude est de dresser un premier état des lieux entre activités physiques (sports, éducation physique, etc.) et populisme, à travers des exemples particulièrement significatifs (Jeux olympiques, sport de compétition, formation, etc.), de la deuxième moitié du XIX^e siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui, à travers différents pays et, en particulier, l’Amérique du sud, berceau de cette « idéologie » avec la Russie. Le sport sous toutes ses formes d’expression (Jeux olympiques, sport « bourgeois », sport ouvrier, etc.) sera envisagé ainsi que certaines figures révélatrices de cette orientation (Mussolini, Poutine, Orban, etc.).

Publier les discours de haine

Regards sur l’édition critique de sources antisémites

Cette journée d’étude se propose de repartir de l’événement éditorial constitué par la publication de Mein Kampf en France (voir ici) pour ouvrir des perspectives plus générales sur l’édition critique des sources antisémites. La rencontre, qui repose sur un partenariat franco-allemand, a lieu en Italie, berceau de l’expérience fasciste dont s’inspira l’Allemagne, mais aussi pays où le rapport à ce passé est tout différent et où la circulation du livre d’Hitler a été considérable. Croisant des regards allemands, français et italiens, mais aussi des approches diverses sur le plan disciplinaire (histoire, droit) et professionnel (recherche, documentaire, muséographie), cette rencontre vise à éclairer les enjeux de l’édition critique de sources antisémites et des mécanismes de distanciation qui la caractérisent. Ce faisant, cette journée ambitionne d’apporter une contribution à l’étude de l’antisémitisme et à son actualité, tout en ouvrant des perspectives plus larges aux historiens amenés à manipuler les discours de haine.

Mémoires des passés coloniaux

Perspectives sur un phénomène global du temps présent

Au cours des dernières décennies, les questions mémorielles se sont multipliées à travers le monde. S’il est pertinent d’interroger le phénomène mémoriel dans sa dimension globale, il est aussi intéressant de comprendre comment les différentes mobilisations et politiques mémorielles ont circulé entre des espaces variés. L’objet de ce colloque est d’interroger la spécificité des mémoires de passés coloniaux. Que ce soit dans le cadre de la colonisation des Amériques, de l’Afrique ou de l’Asie, de l’esclavage ou des guerres de libération, les mémoires dites anticoloniales se trouvent au cœur de revendications politiques et sociales multiples qu’il s’agit de décloisonner. Il s’agira notamment de comprendre quels processus sociaux et politiques sont à l’origine de ces constructions mémorielles, quels en sont les vecteurs et les entrepreneurs de mémoire, en prêtant attention aux « régimes mémoriels », à savoir, aux mécanismes destinés à instituer du sens au passé dans l’espace social.

Enlightenment legacy: the rights of man in a global perspective

Postgraduate summer school of the Turin Humanities Programm

The Summer School will focus on the political and constitutional language of the rights of man, seen as the most lasting legacy of the cultural revolution through which the Enlightenment changed the course of global history, acting as a “laboratory of modernity”. It will engage with the Enlightenment’s transformation of the old moral concept of natural rights into the modern political language of the “rights of man” and the ambitious Enlightenment project of bringing about the constitutionalization of the rights of man as part of a modern politics of emancipation that began well ahead of the French Revolution. Moreover, the Summer School will explore the controversial affirmation and metamorphoses of the Enlightenment’s culture of the rights of man in a global context throughout the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. By so doing, it aims at shedding light on the Enlightenment’s relevance to deal with issues raised by the contemporary evolutions of global constitutionalism and governance, that still require to be addressed.
