  Twenty Years Later: Looking Back at 9/11

  Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, the Universities of Toulouse (CAS) and Montpellier (EMMA) in the South of France are joining forces to organize an international interdisciplinary conference on these events. Its aim is to analyze, not only the events and their short-term consequences with a two-decade hindsight, but also the many ways in which those events have been perceived, represented, commented upon, co-opted or rewritten along the years. It also invites reflections upon the way in which some of these responses, representations or co-optations have been in their turn received, commented upon and used in this 20-year period.

  Experimentation symposium and the intensification of presence through the pratices of writing and meta-art

  f (p) est un dispositif de recherche-création, collectif et interdisciplinaire, qui porte sur les enjeux de la présence dans le temps de l’expérimentation, et sur la façon dont cette présence s’expérimente par les mots. Comment, par les mots, l’expérimentateur affine-t-il son propre discernement ? Comment intensifie-t-il sa présence et son attention à ses expérimentations ? Le méta-art conceptualisé par Adrian Piper (dans son article « In support of meta-art », Artforum, 1973) constituera notre point de départ pour explorer le lien entre le langage et l’expérimentation, interroger la façon dont la recherche s’écrit en se faisant, questionner la spécificité d’un langage propre à l’expérience et à la recherche en chantier, envisager la spécificité de la parole des artistes.

  International PhD Contract 2020-2023

  Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

  In this publication we would like to explore the relation between the post-1918 crisis of the liberal system and the use of art and image as political media including its nationalist, gender and class discourses since they reflect the political and economic transformations of the post-war years. Art and cinema allow us to observe processes such as accelerated urbanisation, electrification and the automobile revolution, the incorporation of women into the waged- labour market or class struggles, all of which fed the insecurity and anxiety of industrialised societies which sought shelter in growing protectionism and corporatism.

  Bodies in the city: norms and disparities in the 19th century

  Arts et savoirs journal on OpenEdition

  La recherche en littérature et en sciences humaines – les études dixneuviémistes en particulier – continuent de témoigner régulièrement de l'engouement suscité par la question de la représentation des corps, propice à une multiplicité d'approches et de croisements disciplinaires, qu'ont nourris en particulier les travaux d'Alain Corbin et Georges Vigarello. Les mutations que connaît l'espace urbain au XIX^e siècle imposent aux corps de nouvelles normes, dont peuvent faire état le roman réaliste, la littérature dite panoramique ou encore la presse, et définissent dans le même temps de nouvelles marginalités. Dans un contexte qui se caractérise par un renouvellement des méthodes d’observation scientifique, mais aussi par des réaménagements urbains et l'inauguration de nouveaux lieux dans la ville, il s’agira d’interroger la scientificité du regard que porte le XIX^e siècle sur les corps voués à occuper cet espace.

  Wandering and Anxiety of the Third Kind: Listening to Science Fiction Soundtracks

  Si, dans l’espace, personne ne nous entend crier, les films de science-fiction sont loin d’être silencieux. C’est à l’univers musico-sonore de ce genre protéiforme que le présent colloque entend se consacrer. S’écartant des angles d’étude généralistes et du corpus canonique, il s’agira d’interroger sous un angle musical et sonore une thématique majeure du genre, la représentation de la solitude et de l’errance de l’être humain confronté à des forces supérieures, qu’il s’agisse d’entités organiques, de machinations gouvernementales prenant bien souvent place dans des univers totalitaires ou dystopiques, de manifestations climatiques extrêmes ou des profondeurs du cosmos. Dans ces films se conjuguent poésie visuelle, expression du spectaculaire et périls guettant l’homme. La bande sonore se fait souvent l’écho d’une humanité altérée, accentuant les dérèglements familiaux et/ou psychiques qui mènent les personnages à commettre des actes sombres ou contre nature, ou à errer avec la solitude comme fardeau, confrontés à l’impossible ou à l’infini.

  Robert Breer's cinematographic experiences: arythmia, anti-continuity and other "loss drift"

  Christian Lebrat caractérise le cinéma de Robert Breer comme une expérimentation sur « le (dé)collage visuel, la dysfonction image et son, les déplacements sémantiques multiples et imprévus ». Ces inflexions constituent le sujet même des films et ce qui fait événement lors de leur projection. Elles sont intégrées à une recherche sur les formes de mouvement, sur les matériaux d’une « anti-continuité » et l’expérience de « dérives à perte » (Lyotard). La présentation des recherches sur le mouvement et l’étude des inflexions plastiques cinématographiques constitueront le premier volet de cette journée d’étude. Un deuxième volet sera dédié aux inflexions plastiques dans un cadre de relations entre les films, les peintures et les sculptures de Robert Breer, autour de la notion de « seuil de perception » et des rapports entre mouvement, temps et espace. L’exploration de ce corpus nous permettra enfin d’aborder la question des « seuils de définition » artistique et esthétique.

Indeed, public funding both for the health system in particular and research in general appears crucial to guarantee fair social policies. However, during the past decade, in research and teaching, as well as in the arts, circumstances have become very stringent: project funding, performance agreements, management via evaluation and performance indicators are more common than anytime before. The right to fail is thus obviously threatened by an ideology of success built by the neoliberal economy.

  This conference is part of a transdisciplinary research project about response events led jointly at the University of Tartu, Aix-Marseille University and University of Côte d’Azur. It aims to study responses to representations (literary, artistic, media, historical, etc.) and how these representations can produce an event for given readers/spectators. Leaving aside the events that certain representations can provoke and that are similar to historical facts (as for literary scandals caused by the publication of condemned works), it focuses on representations from the point of view of their response, where the singular experiences of reading/spectating (that are eventually shared) are identified as events. In the current context of representations’ and their media’s–notably screens–proliferation, it appears relevant to re-interrogate the response experience through the events that it can trigger.

  Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

  This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

  "This thing of darkness": the night in anglophone arts and literature

  Night is often seen as the other side of the day, meaning darkness, and potential disorders. But these presumably negative connotations also bear witness to the metaphoric richness of the night, explored relentlessly in literature, the visual arts, and on film. The night is the locus of an ambiguity and indeterminacy, which should not be viewed merely as factors of disorder, but as possibilities for different lives and identities, which seem to radically elude the norms governing diurnal practices. Nonetheless, is it merely a form of transgression or does it inaugurate a mode of existence of its own? Furthermore, to what extent do technical, social, and cultural changes influence those perceptions by blurring the line between day and night? With the inexorable generalisation of lighting and the ubiquity of screens, is the night a thing of the past?
