  Knowledge in Context

  Colloque en l'honneur de Laurence Brockliss et Colin Jones

  In 1997, Laurence Brockliss (Magdalen College, Oxford) and Colin Jones (QMUL) published The Medical World of Early Modern France, a landmark in the history of medicine because of its integration of social and institutional history with intellectual history.  It established a vibrant new approach to the history of medicine and knowledge of the early modern period while also encouraging Anglo-French intellectual exchange.  As 2017 is the twentieth anniversary of this work’s publication and the year of Laurence Brockliss’s retirement, colleagues and former pupils have organized a colloquium in their honour.  Scholars from a range of historical disciplines (classical scholarship/antiquarianism, philosophy, and the natural sciences) will discuss the ways in which knowledge is contextualized in early modern Europe and Britain.

Nous sollicitons des articles abordant un aspect de son œuvre ou un thème voisin.  Après une carrière distinguée au sein du département de philosophie de l’université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, Souleymane Bachir Diagne enseigne depuis une quinzaine d’années aux États-Unis d’Amérique d’abord à la Northwestern University de Chicago puis à la Columbia University de New York. Souleymane Bachir Diagne a développé au cours des années une œuvre philosophique multiforme et influente que ce soit à l’étranger ou au Sénégal.

  “History in Africa” Journal

  This featured section of History in Africa will address the wave of digitisation of archives in Africa over the last fifteen years. With the rise of information technologies, an increasing part of public – and to some extent private - African archives are being digitised and made accessible on the internet. This wave of digitisation is usually seen as a progress with the help of ambitious initiatives applying new technologies to cultural heritage of humanity such as the rescue of the manuscripts of Timbuktu or the Endangered Archives programme at the British Library. Yet as much as these new technologies raise enthusiasm, they also prompt discussions amongst researchers and archivists, which go from intellectual property to sovereignty and governance.

Ces établissements, longtemps considérés comme des lieux repoussoirs, construits en marge des villes ou dissimulés derrière de hauts murs, s’ouvrent aujourd’hui non seulement aux chercheur.e.s mais aussi au public, accueilli ponctuellement lors des journées du patrimoine ou toute l’année dans les musées ouverts au sein de plusieurs centres hospitaliers. Le succès rencontré par ces initiatives témoigne de l’intérêt suscité par le patrimoine médical, scientifique, technique, architectural et naturel des hôpitaux psychiatriques.

Ces connaissances nouvelles sont fondées en grande partie sur les travaux menés sur le terrain, au Moyen-Orient, en particulier sur les manuscrits conservés dans les monastères et les patriarcats, et plus généralement sur le patrimoine littéraire, linguistique, archéologique, cartographique et musicologique, des communautés chrétiennes installées.
