Studying medieval buildings (1850-1950)

Actors, stakes and methods

The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19^th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.

Lithuania and the “margins” of Europe

The aim of these two sessions is to explore the place of Lithuania within the geopolitical and social sphere of Europe during the later Middle Ages. The first looks to explore the encounters between Lithuania and the other political and religious groups that held stakes within the Baltic arena. The second session will examine the various perceptions Christian Europeans had of Lithuania and place it within a larger reflection on the image of the so-called “margins” of Europe in the Western European discourse.

A world in movement: the circulation of people, assets and ideas in the Merovingian age (5th-13th century)

La localisation de Nantes en limite du royaume franc, en bord de Loire et ouverte sur l’océan, en fait le lieu idéal pour s’interroger sur la circulation des hommes, des biens et des idées dans des limites qui pourront éventuellement déborder du monde mérovingien. Les moyens de communication, les échanges, le commerce, les influences ou encore les transferts technologiques et culturels feront ainsi l’objet d’une approche multiscalaire permettant d’appréhender la question à l’échelle locale ou régionale (au sein des campagnes, dans l’espace urbain, relations villes/campagne, contextes littoraux ou intérieurs…) mais aussi sur de plus longues distances et par-delà les mers.

Prison spaces in the Middle Ages: an interdisciplinary approach to the territories and materialities of medieval incarceration

While recent work has renewed our knowledge of medieval execution sites and of the internal layout of detention facilities, much remains to be done to understand the distribution of prison spaces and territories, in particular to shed light on the socio-spatial dynamics and logic of their establishment. These prison spaces evolved between the beginning and the extreme end of the Middle Ages, with prisons only multiplying from the 13th century onwards. These evolutions must be understood in close coordination with the evolutions of medieval justice and its spatial practices. Studies can be carried out at the scale of a building, a neighborhood, a city, a city, one or more regions.

Craftsmen and metalworking in medieval cities: thirty five years later

The symposium Craftsmen and Metalworking in Medieval Cities: 35 Years Later addresses the metallurgies of iron, copper, tin, lead and precious metals, which produced a wide variety of objects necessary for urban life at the end of the Middle Ages. The nature, volume and possible standardization of production may be studied, as well as the needs of the city, the practices and techniques of craftsmen, their knowledge and know-how. The relationships between the crafts and between the craftsmen themselves might be examined, including dependency links, pluriactivity, networks of sociability or local relationships in urban areas. The identity and regulation of these crafts, their integration into urban society, their relationship with the surrounding rural areas and with other cities may also be revisited.

Paray-le-Monial autumn events

Palais et châteaux, deux histoires monumentales entremêlées. Construites sur le mont Palatin, qui a donné le mot palais (Pfalz, palace, palazzo, palacio), les demeures des empereurs romains réunissaient dans leurs murs l’habitation, la religion, la culture, le sport et le pouvoir. Au IX^e siècle encore, Charlemagne confiait à sa chapelle les archives de l’empire et aux thermes d’Aix ses heures d’exercices physiques. Les empereurs germaniques, les rois des royaumes d’Europe ont conservé l’union architecturale du politique et du religieux. D’origine plus récente, le château est né avec la féodalité, commençant modestement par des constructions de bois sur motte. Edifiés sur de plus grandes dimensions et augmentés d’une chapelle castrale (comme à Châteauneuf), les châteaux de pierre dominaient de petits territoires ou de plus vastes contrées, ils gardaient aussi des passages routiers, des ponts, des cols, des gués …

The Western Mediterranean in the 5th century. The great upheaval?

The 5th century is unequivocally identified as a key moment in the history of the Western Mediterranean, marked in particular by the establishment of the Barbarian kingdoms, the end of the Roman Empire in the West and a new phase of Christianity's expansion. These are all major, if not fundamental, upheavals that have profoundly and lastingly influenced the evolution of this geographical area. Currently data available make it very difficult to form a satisfactory global vision of this century because they are so heterogeneous, dispersed and often diluted in diachronic approaches. From this observation emerges the need to gather, cross-reference and compare the extremely abundant information in order to measure the transformations and the space they affect during the 5th century. An international symposium is undoubtedly the most appropriate tool to approach this issue, given the multiplicity of research teams working in this field and the scope of the geographical framework concerned.

This meaningful concept, both in its literal and figurative acceptions, has remained at the heart of critical thought for a long time, as scholars have sought to reflect on its particular potentialities whilst attempting to renew approaches to their own subjects of study. Participants, starting from their specific subjects and disciplines, are invited to reflect on the notion of margin, on the similar notions of limit and border, and on the place they hold in their own research.

Mémoires du passé dans l’Espagne médiévale et classique » tenu à l’université d’Artois en 2014 (actes publiés dans la revue e-Spania en janvier 2016, ainsi qu’aux échanges sur la perméabilité entre histoire et littérature dans les productions fictionnelles espagnoles d’aujourd'hui au cours de rencontres qui interrogeaient le traitement des sources historiques par les romanciers contemporains comme la forme narrative complexe de la biographie romanesque, il s’agira à présent d’ouvrir un nouveau volet de ce questionnement.

Les fréquentes hécatombes dans le Sahara puis dans la barrière méditerranéenne nous engagent à porter de nouveau la réflexion sur le phénomène des migrations internationales. Devenues aujourd’hui le symbole d’une crise mondiale qui mobilise tous les Etats africain, eurasien, américain et océanien, elles combinent à la fois des dimensions politiques, économiques, sociales et culturelles incontestables. La mobilité humaine et les migrations ne sont pourtant pas des phénomènes nouveaux et exceptionnels. Depuis les premières heures de l’humanité, partout dans le monde, elles ont régulièrement modelé nos sociétés. Si elles sont aujourd’hui un problème délicat de gouvernance politique, alors il faut s’interroger sur les raisons qui les motivent, les logiques qui les gouvernent puis sur les conséquences qu’elles entrainent.

Les découvertes archéologiques se sont en particulier multipliées et proposent un renouveau de l'histoire du réseau routier breton. Elles seront confrontées aux découvertes et connaissances s'agissant des périodes moderne et contemporaine, afin de proposer une véritable lecture diachronique de l'histoire du réseau routier breton. Pour cette raison, les regards disciplinaires seront croisés, entre archéologie, archéogéographie, histoire et géographie.
