Crises and Preaching

Lexis, framing, timings, 19th‒21st century in the Middle East

Is preaching consubstantial with crisis? Did the different religious traditions present in the Middle East come to grip with the notion of crisis during the contemporary period? This workshop examines the similarities and divergences between preaching endeavours by the different religious traditions and the transformations in religious discourse in the Middle East from the end of the 19th century onwards. Through a comparative and diachronic analysis, it aims to identify what "constitutes a crisis" for particular religious actors at a given moment in the contemporary history of the Middle East (e.g. military defeat, feelings of inferiority vis-à-vis Europe, demographic decline of a given religious group, secularisation of institutions, rise of atheism, etc.)

First, we aim to address marginality as a category of analysis. Second, we encourage reflections on cross-reading administrative and police archives with community archives. Finally, we welcome papers that focus on the materiality of archives.

Les génocides dans le regard des artistes

L’Université des deux années précédentes 2023 et 2024 a été consacrée à l’enfant dans l’univers des génocides : avant, pendant, après. Notre questionnement volontairement multidisciplinaire concernait plusieurs pistes de réflexions mêlant chronologie et thèmes. Certains intervenants se sont appuyés déjà sur la création artistique ou littéraire des rescapés comme exorcisation des déchirures qu’ils avaient subies. Ils anticipaient à la marge le thème que nous avons choisi pour l’Université 2025 : les génocides dans le regard des artistes, graphistes, plasticiens et sculpteurs exclusivement. Parmi les victimes des génocides dont ARES explore le champ d’étude, de nombreux artistes ont été emportés dans tourmente brisant vies et carrières. Certains ont cependant réussi à créer, à laisser des traces visuelles clandestines là où leurs tortionnaires misaient sur le secret.

S’engager dans une carrière de danseur-euse nécessite de faire de nombreux sacrifices : l’engagement est souvent précoce, l’accès à l’emploi est difficile et le rythme de vie est marqué par l’instabilité géographique et les abnégations personnelles. Dans le même temps, l’entrée dans ce métier offre une reconnaissance sociale singulière et permet d’accéder à un style de vie qualifié tantôt « d’artiste » ou de « bohème ». Partant du constat que devenir danseur-euse c’est intégrer un monde professionnel et souvent modifier en profondeur son style de vie, cette journée d’étude vise à interroger la transformation des individus à travers la socialisation dans un métier artistique. En somme, qu’apprend-on, qu’apprend-on à faire, qu’apprend-on à être quand on pratique la danse ?

Endogenous structures for the conservation of cultural property in Africa in the context of the repatriation of stolen cultural objects

In the historical context of the repatriation of stolen African objects preserved in European museums, little attention has been paid to the endogenous spaces and structures of conservation from which African objects have been extracted since the 15th century. However, the museum institution that Europe seeks to impose on African societies as a solution to their current conservation is a recent initiative and not adapted to African realities. Furthermore, the aim of the debate on the spoliation of African cultural property is not to insist essentially on the problem of provenance or documentation of the stolen objects, even less on the “actors of the theft” or “collectors,” but to question the meaning and significance of African cultural productions in time and space. It is a question of proposing a historical-cultural reading of African societies, contradicting the discourses that disfavor the return of looted objects. The authors and promoters of these discourses, denying the African societies that produced and used these stolen cultural objects, the ability to receive and preserve them properly.

Héritier de la fin du XVIII^e siècle, celle de Kant et de Goethe, mais aussi de Herder et Humboldt, contemporain de la charnière des XIX^e et XX^e siècles dont l’essor scientifique et technique l’effraie autant qu’il le fascine, l'historien de l'art Aby Warburg était mu par une curiosité sans limite, une soif d’infini à laquelle répondit année après année l’expansion de sa bibliothèque. Pourtant cette curiosité était conduite et balisée par un ensemble relativement restreint de questions, qu’il examina sans cesse à nouveaux frais à la lumière de ces « formes symboliques » qui constituaient le support et la matière de ses enquêtes : qu’est-ce que l’homme ? Comment comprendre le passage de l’impression sensible à l’expression symbolique? Quelles sont les fonctions des formes symboliques dans l’économie psychique ? Quelles sont les grandes passions qui structurent la vie humaine ? Quel rôle les images et les mots jouent-ils dans notre orientation ? Ce numéro de la Nouvelle revue d’esthétique s’intéressera aux diverses reformulations de ces questions tout au long de l’œuvre de Warburg et aux réponses qu’il y apporte.

Inside activism was the subject of a profusion of studies in the 1990s and 2000s, whether in the environmental field, gender politics, or urban policy, many of which can be found in the special issue devoted to it by Politix in 2005. Although this subject has received less attention since then, it has prompted much research abroad, particularly in Latin America. This event aims to revisit the study of institutional activism by examining it in the light of diverse political contexts, particularly within the authoritarian and illiberal dynamics that shape the commitment of public agents.

Patrimoines en conflits : savoirs locaux et préservation du patrimoine

En situation de conflit armé, le patrimoine culturel révèle ses vulnérabilités. Les collections de musées, de bibliothèques et d’archives ainsi que les monuments et le patrimoine bâti sont souvent les victimes malheureuses des interventions militaires. Dans le cadre de cette journée d’étude, nous souhaitons mettre en valeur la question des savoirs locaux dans la préservation du patrimoine en situation de conflit armés. Il est nécessaire, croyons-nous, de nous interroger sur le rôle des acteurs locaux dans le succès et l’échec des politiques de protection et de valorisation du patrimoine. Ces acteurs locaux sont potentiellement des acteurs clés de la préservation en situation de conflits armés. Cette réflexion nécessite l’exploration des savoirs locaux qu’ils peuvent convoquer ou construire en vue d’assurer une collaboration pour une préservation du patrimoine.
