  Formulas in Medieval Culture

  The fourth bi-annual conference on Formulas in Medieval Culture (initiated by the research groups GRENDEL and IDEA, based at the University of Lorraine, France) will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June 2018 at the Centre d'Etudes Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévale (CESCM) at the University of Poitiers. In the Middle Ages, modes of thought and representation involving repetition and regularity, which were expected and easily identifiable, were sources of rich tensions between individual expression and collective norms, between change and continuity, between creation and convention.

  International medieval congress 2018

  Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

  Depuis une trentaine d’années, les études sur les émotions constituent un courant important de la recherche historique en général et helléniste en particulier. Les travaux d’Angelos Chaniotis et de David Konstan ont marqué cette tendance, et de nombreux ouvrages sur les émotions en général ou sur des émotions particulières comme aidôs (D. Cairns) ou la colère (Ed. Harris) ont vu le jour. Nous avons choisi d’approfondir une émotion fondamentale, la peur. Outre sa qua­lité de moteur péda­go­gique capital pour la petite enfance, la peur, sous ses différentes formes, combinée à des émotions annexes comme l’angoisse ou la stupeur, accompagne toutes les manifestations de la vie humaine.

  There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

Ihr wissenschaftliches Profil ist vor allem geprägt durch langfristig orientierte Grundlagenforschung der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften.   In 1989, a survey of French cultural taste revealed that Serge Gainsbourg was both one of the most popular singers and yet a near outcast in his native country. When he died, two years later, President Mitterrand called him “our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire,” claiming he had “elevated chanson to the level of art.” But he might just as well have acknowledged Gainsbourg as the first artist to top the British charts with a single in a foreign language. With the hindsight of almost thirty years, one thing is, in any case, certain: sampled by Beck, De La Soul, Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, remixed by Howie B. and David Holmes, translated by Mick Harvey and covered by Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, Portishead, Madeleine Peyroux, the Pet Shop Boys and Franz Ferdinand, “the man with the cabbage head” remains the Francophone songwriter whose contribution to the international appeal of French popular music has been the most significant in the post-war era.

  The very first World Exhibition, held in London in 1851, presented industry as a thriving sector, a dreamworld offering man endless possibilities. This theme was a constant in subsequent Exhibitions, culminating in the Paris Exhibition of 1900, which represented a new highpoint for technological achievement. It was at this time, between 1880 and 1914, that Germany sought to impose itself as an industrial giant. By the time of the Exhibition of 1904, held in the American city of St Louis[1], German industrialists were working harder than ever to achieve recognition from their peers around the world.

  La quatrième et dernière journée d’études de notre cycle « femmes déviantes, femmes criminelles » s’organise autour du thème « Justice et société face aux femmes hérétiques et blasphématrices ». Elle envisage l’étude des comportements mais aussi des répercussions sur l’environnement social et familial. Les périodes de tensions confessionnelles témoignent de climats particuliers mais permettent des questionnements nombreux et précis, tant du point de vue de l’autorité (judiciaire, politique...) que des déviantes.

  Five Centuries of Cultural Influence

  Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire.  The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

  Warfare, distance and “civilizing process”

  Cette session – simple ou double selon l'affluence et la qualité des abstracts proposés – invite des socio-historiens, sociologues ou historiens qui interrogent les pratiques guerrières en termes proxémiques et de transformation du rapport au corps à présenter l'état de leurs réflexions et recherches théorico-empiriques. Les abstracts peuvent porter sur des cas d'étude issus de l'époque médiévale jusqu'au siècle passé, véritable laboratoire de violences de masse, de même qu'elles peuvent bien sûr avoir trait aux guerres ayant cours aujourd'hui. La session aura lieu dans le cadre du prochain congrès mondial de sociologie qui se déroulera à Toronto du 15 au 21 juillet 2018 et est organisée par le comité de recherche RC56 (Historical Sociology), notamment lié à la fondation Norbert Elias.

  Depuis deux ans, l’équipe de l’axe « Arts et mémoires d’Europe » du laboratoire IRHiS (Institut de recherches historiques du Septentrion) de l’université de Lille organise un séminaire mensuel consacré au thème « Apprentissage, travail et création ». Conçu selon la modalité d’un workshop, avec un temps de parole très large accordé à l’échange entre collègues mais aussi avec le public étudiant, ces ateliers ont accueilli des spécialistes provenant de la France entière. Nous souhaitons à présent organiser deux journées d’étude consacrées au thème de l’apprentissage artistique en Europe, de l’antiquité à l’époque contemporaine, pour explorer plus particulièrement les notions de « lieu », « communauté », « réseau » et « transmission familiale ».

  Is there still a place below?

  The contemporary landscape of nano-sciences and nano-technologies

  En décembre 1959, Richard Feynman lança le mouvement nano avec son slogan devenu légendaire « il y a plein de place en bas ». Presque 60 ans plus tard, il existe de nombreuses raisons de penser que les nanosciences atteignent ou ont déjà atteint leur maturité : un volume grandissant de publications dans le domaine, des programmes de premier cycle et d’études supérieures, des conférences internationales et une large gamme de projets de recherche sur différents aspects des nanosciences et des nanotechnologies. Quand on le compare à la chimie, à la physique ou à la biologie, on doit reconnaître qu’il s’agit d’un domaine relativement jeune, mais nous souhaitons profiter de cette publication pour faire le point sur ce qui a été réalisé et sur la façon dont le domaine a évolué au cours de sa courte histoire.

  Frantz Fanon’s Legacy in the Literature and the Arts of the Americas

  One-day conferences

  It turns out to be an epistemological necessity to analyze the scope of Fanon’s thought and style in the cultural and artistic productions of the Americas, not only because of Fanon’s concern for the creation and defense of a national culture but also because of his obvious interest for literature and the care he devoted to the process of writing. The transdisciplinary approach of the two one-day conferences « Frantz Fanon’s Legacy in the Literature and the Arts of the Americas » will encompass all the countries and areas of the Americas and the Caribbean, whatever their languages. We also welcome papers on all kinds of art, ranging from literature to cinema, painting, songs and street art (as in Bogota for instance). We warmly welcome papers that will adopt a comparative approach between different geographical areas. Papers will preferably be written in French, but English and Spanish will be accepted.

  The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages

  Rolls were used in all aspects of medieval society. Key areas in which rolls were utilized include administration, genealogies, poetry, liturgy and heraldry. Despite the significance of the roll as a form for medieval writing culture, it has not received as much attention in respect to its significance. The international conference The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages focuses on the materiality and the praxeology of late medieval rolls (1200 – 1500), particularly in England and France. The presentations deal with questions regarding the purpose and function of the rolls, the advantages and disadvantages of the roll form and why it was preferred for certain texts over other forms, such as the codex.

Son objectif est de mettre en lumière une culture commune de la mémoire documentaire des sociétés contemporaines en croisant les exemples sur une échelle internationale, en montrant les transferts de savoirs et de techniques documentaires et en retraçant l’évolution parallèle ou commune du statut toujours ambigu du « document ».
