  An Environmental History of the Great War

  We intend to bring together an international group of 20 to 30 graduate students working on military, cultural, social, and environmental history of the First World War from 2nd to 7th July 2018. Over the course of the week, they will have opportunity to get to know each other, but also a wide range of internationally recognized academic experts. Guided tours on excursions to French and Belgian sites are an integral part of the program and will enrich the participants' experience.

  New Spaces of Collection: Crossing Perspectives on Today ‘Gatherers’

  “EchoGéo” journal n°47 - January-March 2019

  The purpose of this issue of EchoGéo is to initiate an innovative approach toward contemporary practices of collection and their socio-spatial effects. The term ‘collection’ covers a wide panel of processes used for the gathering of valuable materials picked up from localised environments and feeding supra-local trading and production channels. The proposal is to compare two kinds of collection spaces and practices, which seem to be opposed, namely those of medicinal plants’ gatherers and those of urban waste pickers multi-scaled. Through such analogy, whose today’s dynamics are bringing new heuristic interest, the objective is to consider conceptual issues such as marginality, informality, multi-scaled organisation of economic channels, access to resources and value regimes

  Rumours and fake new in environmental issues

  Incertitudes, rumeurs et fausses vérités ont parfois accompagné les discours sur tel événement ou tel enjeu environnemental que ce séminaire viendra mettre en lumière. Les interventions pourront analyser des discours présents (une géographie culturelle des rumeurs environnementales) ou passés (une géohistoire), afin de montrer aussi ce qui fait la spécificité de chaque époque et/ou de chaque rumeur dans sa diffusion et mobilisation spatiale. Comparer les temporalités de différentes rumeurs permettra aussi de voir comment chaque époque construit sa définition de la rumeur. Avec des interrogations spatiales et environnementales, les intervenants viennent de différentes disciplines.

  The impact of the Modern Movement and modernisation processes on rural landscapes in Europe and beyond is a widespread but little known, recognised or understood phenomenon which still exerts effects today. Within the third joint research programme of HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) dedicated to “The uses of the past” which started in 2016, this subject is now being studied through several lenses within the MODSCAPES project. MODSCAPES welcomes proposals (full sessions, papers, trainnig/workshop) to its mid-event event, an international conference dedicated to Modernism, modernisation and the rural landscape.

  The work of Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891) in the context of the Grand Paris project today

  Creation and transmission of an urban landscape

  À l’heure du développement du Grand Paris mais également de la transformation de la capitale intra-muros et à la lumière des Plans climat et biodiversité, ce colloque revient sur l’œuvre fondatrice d’Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891). Figure majeure, mais encore peu connue de l’urbanisme parisien, Adolphe Alphand a dirigé la création du paysage parisien pendant presque quarante ans, initialement en collaboration avec le préfet Haussmann et ensuite en tant que Directeur général des Travaux de la ville de Paris. Organisé à l’occasion du 200^e anniversaire de sa naissance, ce colloque se propose de réunir des historiens, des écologues, des paysagistes-concepteurs, des architectes et des urbanistes afin d'aborder son œuvre, sa réception et son héritage en regard du développement du Grand Paris et des villes du XXI^e siècle.

  Human Sea European Research Council program final international Conference

  The Human Sea European research Council program aims to respond to the problems related to the development of human activities at sea, which lead progressively to a transformation of the law of the sea and maritime law, and remain today legally little framed. The objective of the Human Sea program, led by Patrick Chaumette, Professor of Law at the University of Nantes and former director of the Center of Maritime and Oceanic Law (CDMO), is to rethink the concepts born of the history of maritime activities and navigation and to question the intervention of States at sea, from their territorial waters to the high seas. The compromises reached in 1982 with respect to the law of the sea will also be examined in the light of threats and new techniques.

  Ce numéro de Frontières entend explorer la multiplicité et les transformations des morts animales dans les sociétés contemporaines. En partant de diverses catégories d’animaux (de rente, de ferme, d’assistance, de compagnie, de spectacle, d’expérimentation, de refuge, de zoo, sauvages, « nuisibles » ou « indésirables », etc.), il s’agira d’examiner la confrontation avec différents types et contextes de mort des animaux. Les propositions pourront ainsi aborder les diverses modalités de la mort des bêtes que sont l’abattage, la chasse, le sacrifice, l’euthanasie, l’expérimentation, l’élimination sanitaire, mais aussi les situations de guerre, prédation, pratiques rituelles ou spectaculaires diverses, etc.

  Nouvelles écologies, « bioart », « biodesign »

  Ce  colloque réunit des artistes, designers, architectes et chercheurs qui développent une réflexion sur les manières d’intégrer le vivant dans des projets en art, en design et en architecture. En exposant des êtres vivants ou des processus vitaux, ou en instaurant des collaborations avec eux, ces explorations qui mettent « la vie à l’œuvre » contribuent à faire émerger de nouvelles écologies. Ces projets ont en commun de redéfinir la notion de nature, en invitant à repenser les modalités des interventions des humains au sein de leurs environnements. Ce n’est alors pas simplement la création de formes vivantes inédites qui est intéressante mais l’étude des systèmes de relations qui se tissent autour de ces êtres. Un des enjeux de cette réflexion collective sur l’instauration de nouvelles écologies est de repenser l’articulation entre nature et technique. Les pratiques en art, design ou architecture conduisent en effet à explorer l’imbrication entre processus vitaux et processus techniques et à s’interroger sur les diverses manières qu’ont les humains de vivre avec la nature tout en la transformant.

  Landscapes of the strange

  Art and research relating to the visible and invisible traces of conflicts - interdisciplinary and inter-artistic approaches to war heritag

  This symposium is part of the research project “landscape(s) of the strange. On visible and invisible traces of a regional heritage in transformation. Artistic and theoretical (re)-constructions of a cross-border history marked by major conflicts” started in 2016. To begin with, the project approached the notion of “trace” or “mark” in its material (heritage, architecture, vegetation) and immaterial (memory, culture) dimensions, especially those related to the concrete landscape of Lorraine which bears the mark of a conflictual history opposing Frenchmen and Germans, especially during the two World Wars.
