  Resisting War in the 20th Century

  This congress intends to promote debate about the multiple kinds of resistance to war as well as explore the different academic approaches taken to studying it, especially but not exclusively in history, anthropology, sociology and political science as well as literary, cultural, artistic, subaltern and gender studies. We call for empirical, theoretical or methodological papers that discuss the issue of resistance to war in the twentieth century in its multiple performances and visions, in different observation scales. We hope to see studies highlighting different actors, institutions, practices and speeches and also hegemonic or counter-hegemonic collective representations.

  Communications and media in the USSR and Eastern Europe

  Technologies, politics, cultures, social practices

  In the social sciences, communications are considered fundamental to the constitution of any society. The technologies and infrastructures for communications are also social institutions in their own right, with their own specific historical trajectories.  With this in mind, we can assume that political regimes that abuse their control of communications engender social atomization, the rupture or weakening of social ties, in that attempts to maintain these ties via communications media may be met with repression.  At the same time, however, it is social relations — “useful” connections – that allow individuals to engage in mutual assistance and to exchange goods and services in the economies of shortage typical of many authoritarian regimes.

  Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st century / Medizinische Expertise im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert / L'expertise médicale aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

  Eating at work (XVIIIe-XXIth centuries)

  Eating at work, considered in the broad sense as all food consumption practices related to an employed occupation, both everyday and exceptional, in times of strike or during celebrations, constitutes a privileged observatory of social practices, whether they relate to hierarchical power relations or to horizontal, egalitarian sociability in the world of work. The last three centuries (XVIII-XXI centuries) have seen profound changes in the ways in which food is consumed at work, exposing the transformation of societies and their relationship to work, nutrition and taste. The movement seems to concern Europe and beyond, a dimension to be explored in our work, even so we assume that its rhythms varied widely.

  Las transferencias, circulares e influencias, entre Europa y América Latina, en ambos sentidos, han sido abordadas habitualmente por la historiografía política con una marcada focalización hacia los fenómenos revolucionarios, progresistas o de izquierdas. Por contra, no conocemos suficientemente lo que ocurrió en el terreno de los conservadores o los contrarrevolucionarios - para el siglo XX podríamos utilizar el término derechas -. Este proyecto se propone explorar este rico, aunque poco visitado y transitado, campo de trabajo a partir de una auténtica interdisciplinareidad, que permita el intercambio entre historiadores y antropólogos, sociólogos, especialistas de la ciencia política, filólogos y economistas, y, asimismo, de un estudio de los vaivenes entre los dos continentes, sin sobrevalorar la línea Europa-América.

  Second World Urbanity: Between Capitalist and Communist Utopias seeks to investigate the history of the radical reshaping of the Soviet World (in our words - the Second World), that Ada Louise Huxtable reported on in the late 1960s. This project aims to bring together scholarly contributions on the various endeavors in the Second World to conceive, build, and inhabit a socialist cityscape that was an alternative to the segregated spaces of capitalist cities and the atomized world of suburbia. Imagining and designing urban space were undeniably powerful instruments of forging socialist modernity. Second World Urbanity pays close attention to the tensions between global challenges and locally driven agendas that made architects, planners, and ordinary dwellers alter socialist modernity according to more particular interests.

  Dans le cadre des travaux du groupe FNRS « Écrits d'artistes », ce colloque interrogera les différentes modalités de collaborations d’artistes et leurs réalisations concrètes dans une publication périodique. Sous le terme d’« artiste », on prendra en compte peintres, sculpteurs, musiciens, compositeurs, cinéastes, chorégraphes, danseurs… dont la majeure part de la production ne relève pas du champ littéraire. Le présent appel invite à considérer ces interventions sur la longue durée, de 1830 à nos jours, dans les publications périodiques, entendues au sens large : revues artistiques et littéraires, mais aussi journaux et revues généralistes, « petite presse » et magazines (pour la seconde partie du XXe siècle).

  Women and the Arab Spring: two years on

  Les femmes ont pris une part active au Printemps arabe à la fois sur Internet et dans les rues. Que ce soit en Tunisie, au Maroc et en Égypte ou encore en Libye, au Yémen et en Syrie, elles ont montré une aspiration à la liberté et à l’égalité aussi grande et aussi déterminée que celle des hommes. Des figures féminines célèbres ont émergé de cette aspiration légitime dont la yéménite TawakkulKarman, co-prix Nobel de la Paix en 2011. Mais deux ans après le déclenchement du Printemps arabe et la montée en puissance des partis et des courants islamistes, le combat des femmes pour la liberté et pour l’égalité semble entravé sinon contrecarré par des forces conservatrices un peu partout. Les femmes arabes sont confrontées au paradoxe de sociétés tiraillées entre l’appel de la modernité et la revendication identitaire. Parfois, la confrontation est violente et les projets de société radicalement différents comme en Tunisie et en Égypte. Quel regard portent les femmes arabes sur ces évolutions ? Comment gèrent-t-elles ces paradoxes ? Quelles perspectives d’avenir pour les pays touchés par le Printemps arabe ?

  The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University invites applications for 2 PhD scholarships (3 years) on Sino-Soviet War Crimes Trials Policy (1944-1949) within the Junior Research Group (JRG) “Transcultural Justice: Legal Flows and the Emergence of International Justice within the East Asian War Crimes Trials, 1946-1954”. The JRG examines the interaction between War Crimes trials policy in Europe and Asia after 1945, and focuses on institutions and legal staff as agents of concepts and norms which later became codified as UN standard.
