Ideas from the Americas, to be published in October 2020, will focus on “The creative power of margins: the rise of black, native, and mixed-race intellectuals in the Americas, 19th-20th centuries”. We want to focus on the Black and non-white intellectual Americas. We receive proposals for articles on all countries of the American continent, in French, English, Spanish or Portuguese.

  Cultural connections

  A concept for rethinking interculturalities, identities and otherness in Iberian America

  Nous souhaiterions que cette journée d’étude soit l’occasion de nous approprier le concept de « branchement », théorisé par Jean-Loup Amselle, qui a jusqu’ici été relativement peu utilisé dans les travaux portant sur l’Amérique ibérique, au-delà des cercles spécialisés en anthropologie ou ethno-histoire. Il s’agit pour nous de mettre à l’épreuve la pertinence de cet outil et son caractère opératoire dans les domaines spécifiques qui intéressent les participants. Dans quelle mesure ce concept permettrait-il en effet de re-penser certains phénomènes, que les concepts habituels de métissage, acculturation ou transfert ne parviennent pas à saisir complètement ? En quoi cet outil heuristique pourrait-il renouveler les approches des américanistes et, à l’inverse, comment ceux-ci pourraient-ils s’en saisir afin de lui donner une nouvelle interprétation ?

Les divers·e·s intervenant·e·s de la journée tenteront d’identifier et d’analyser, à travers l’histoire de la question agraire et les débats souvent binaires (partisans et opposants à la réforme agraire) qui l’ont jalonnée, les avancées et les reculs, les ruptures et les continuités, permettant d’éclairer la situation actuelle.

  Social movements in overseas departments since the beginning of the 21st century

  Presages of a new era for overseas departments

  Ce colloque vise à faire le point sur les mobilisations sociales qui touchent depuis le début du XXIe siècle les entités ultramarines régies par l'article 73 de la Constitution. En effet, les territoires qui ont connu le processus de la départementalisation (Guyane, Guadeloupe, Martinique, La Réunion, Mayotte) connaissent depuis près d’une décennie des mouvements de contestation d’une ampleur inédite qui paralysent leur vie économique et sociale pendant plusieurs semaines voire plusieurs mois. Les revendications évoquées lors de ces mobilisations (vie chère, inégalités, insécurité, immigration,...) ont mis en évidence l’existence d’un profond malaise vis-à-vis de la situation économique et sociale de ces territoires en dépit de la constante amélioration de leurs principaux indicateurs économiques et sociodémographiques au cours de ces dernières décennies. L’objectif de ce colloque, conçu dans une double perspective, interdisciplinaire et comparatiste, est de faire le bilan de ces mobilisations et de penser ce qu’elles révèlent de l’état du modèle départemental aujourd’hui.

  Music, Tradition and Creativity in the Digital Era

  New Ethnomusicological Perspectives From the Global South

  This Symposium will explore how digital media and new technologies have affected the ways through which musicians, producers and researchers experiment and engage with "traditional" musical forms, in Colombia and in other parts of the world. The participants are invited to share their research results and methodological experimentations in the field of applied ethnomusicology, music pedagogy, performance, digital audio production or digital humanities about the study of the impact of digital technologies about current musical practices. This Symposium will also include the presence of several local musicians and producers who will conduct workshops on "traditional" Colombian music and music from other countries of the global South.

  Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

  "Modernas, flappers, and garçonnes": the representation of femininity in the 1920s and 1930s

  Spanish, French and Anglo-Saxon perspectives

  Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.

  Les lieux intermédiaires...

  Dans cet ouvrage, nous nous intéresserons aux continents perdus, aux mondes transitionnels où des hommes et des groupes sociaux peuvent dépasser leurs limites dans le sentiment de reliance au monde et à l’autre. Ces lieux intermédiaires sont présents et identifiables dans les mythologies et dans les lieux que nous pouvons rencontrer dans nombre de recours contemporains au Moyen Âge mais que l’on ne peut répertorier sur aucune carte géographique ni intégrer à aucune frise chronologique. Autant d’’espaces-temps fabuleux, contrées, cités et royaumes fictifs, espaces initiatiques qui sont tour à tour le domaine de la peur ou des enchantements, de l’initiation philosophique, de la satire politique ou de l’utopie. Pourront être interrogées les formes de l’imaginaire intimes ou sociales, les littératures, les cosmogonies et les cosmologies.

  Nowadays, the assessment of environmental changes worldwide is indisputable. Interdependent processes – such as global warming, the extinction of species, soil depletion and scarce energy resources – deeply alter the living conditions in our societies, from a material and symbolic point of view. These systemic transformations go well beyond the physical environment or climate change; they can be understood thanks to the concept of “global changes” that has become a main research topic in the fields of social and environmental sciences over the past thirty years. For its thirteenth issue, RITA will dedicate its section Thema to American cities facing global changes.

  In a contemporary age in which “think globally, act locally” has become a slogan, has the propensity to favour local initiatives resulted in shifting loyalties, has it modified the level at which citizens feel their strongest sense of belonging? Has it altered conceptions of citizenship? Has it had any impact on the locus of power? Which conceptual tools are most pertinent when trying to apprehend the social, cultural and political dimensions of regions and regionalism in Canada? How has the territorial notion of “region”, which comes out of the European tradition, been articulated to adapt to the Canadian context, especially with regard to the question of belonging (communities, nations, etc)?

  Seeing Politics through Intermediation and Intermediaries

  This seminar proposes to look at politics through the lens of political intermediaries and what they do, i.e. intermediation. Intermediaries can be defined as an assorted group of actors (political brokers, political parties, interest groups, movements) who acts as a hinge between two or more levels, actors or social institutions; while intermediation , as a process, encompasses all the mediations that these actors perform in order to keep the political system intact (Zaremberg, Guarneros-Meza, and Lavalle 2017; Gunther, Puhle, and Montero 2007; Kitschelt 2004; Smith 2007). The question we are interested in relates to the transformations in the roles of these agents and processes of mediation since the neo-liberal transformation has engulfed the processes of public policy formulation, contestation and enactment.

Il s’agira de faire le point sur un sujet peu étudié, dans une perspective historique (et non pas clinique ou pathologique) de l'Antiquité au milieu du XIX^e siècle.   Colonisations, revolutions, and reinventions in early America and the Atlantic World 1600-1848

  8th biannual conference of the European Early American Studies Association

  This call for papers invites established scholars, post-doctoral students and graduate students to re-examine the fundamental concept of Atlantic history in light of current research on the themes of colonisations, revolutions, and reinventions, from 1600 to 1848. It is also an opportunity to examine the history of transformations in early America and, broadly, the early modern world, by taking fuller account of scholarship on the politics of primitive globalisation. We will focus on the empires that organised European settlements in disrupting and dislocating native peoples, prompting indigenous cultures to re-invent themselves; but we will  also be attentive to the processes that led to the formation of new Euro-American societies in the Americas, often shaped by the enslavement of Africans and other forms of unfree labor. In the North-American colonies, the West Indies, India, Latin America, and Africa, entire peoples and their lands were reinvented by trading companies, individual administrators, theoreticians and executors of empires, as well as by those rare voices, many of who were abolitionists, who developed a critical approach to European expansion abroad.
