Transamerican perspectives

Institut des Amériques - École normale supérieure seminar

Le séminaire « Perspectives transaméricaines » se propose de confronter les visions de chercheurs travaillant sur les différents territoires et aires culturelles des Amériques et de la Caraïbe. À chaque séance, deux brèves interventions (10 minutes) sur un même thème et sur différentes régions du continent seront reprises par un discutant, qui permet de construire une réflexion transaméricaine puis donne la parole à la salle. L’interdisciplinarité est favorisée dans ce séminaire largement ouvert.

“Our Time Has Come”

Towards Transatlantic and Transdisciplinary Approaches to BlackCounter-Representations, from 1945 until Today

The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20^th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

W. E. B. Du Bois, Scholar, Activist and Passeur between America, Europe and Africa

Foundations, Circulations and Legacies

Trained in Classical languages (Latin and Greek), Philosophy, Sociology and History, both in the US and Europe, W. E. B. Du Bois’s intellectual inquiry into the nature of Blackness covers a wide range of disciplines, from History to Political Philosophy, from Sociology to Literature and Poetry, from Art Criticism to Musicology. The colloquium will embrace this multiplicity of approaches which characterizes Du Bois’s work and, at the same time, capture the profound unity of his thought which can be found in the analysis of the “concept of race.” Special attention will also be given to the determinant role played by W. E. B. Du Bois in the transatlantic circulation of knowledge and intellectual commerce between the US, Europe and Africa.

Mobilizing Voters in the United States and the United Kingdom: political strategies from parties and grassroots organizations (1867 – 2017)

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

"Modernas, flappers, and garçonnes": the representation of femininity in the 1920s and 1930s

Spanish, French and Anglo-Saxon perspectives

Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.

Jan Valtin retrospective (1941-1951)

Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’écrivains dont l’œuvre fut aussi fulgurante et la vie aussi pleine de rebondissements que celle de Jan Valtin. Son premier livre, Out of the Night, s’imposa dès sa sortie comme le plus grand succès de l'édition américaine depuis Gone with the wind (Autant en emporte le vent) ; il fut vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires aux États-Unis, en moins d’un an, et fut plus tard traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Ce récit à couper le souffle de la vie d’un révolutionnaire allemand sous la République de Weimar et la première période du nazisme avait pour mérite d’éclairer la façon dont l’action des communistes contre la social-démocratie en tant qu’ennemi principal avait conduit à l’alliance objective des totalitarismes pour détruire la démocratie bourgeoise.

Investigating parental motivation for alternative education

What are parents’ motives to educate without school ? Among the most spontaneously questions addressed to homeschooling, this question has been one of the most researched by scholars, particularly in the United States. Thinking in terms of parental “choice”, “reasons”, “motivations” or “decisions” electing alternative education leads however to conceptual and empirical challenges. To discuss these theoretical and methodological issues of the scientific study of “parental alternative choices”, the workshop gathers researchers whose investigations, about parents who home educate and/or parents who school their children in alternative schools, use diverse concepts or techniques.

Le colloque programmé vise à analyser les représentations des voyageurs mexicains sur l'autre monde, la France et les États-Unis, pays visités par d'innombrables personnalités politiques et intellectuelles, ainsi que par des témoins anonymes, depuis l'indépendance du Mexique au milieu du XX^e siècle. Nous tenterons de déchiffrer ces témoignages mexicains à caractère privé et intime (épistolaires, mémoires, journaux intimes...) sans exclure les chroniques et documents publiés dans la presse sur le monde français et américain entre 1821 et 1950. Comment ces voyageurs, touristes cosmopolites, exilés politiques, artistes en herbe, diplomates ont-ils transcrit leur vision de l'autre, français ou américain ?

Special Issue, “Transatlantica” (journal of American Studies)

This Transatlantica issue will analyze the way in which the construction of radicalism as foreign to US-American identity was received by radicals themselves, to see how they reacted to the branding of their beliefs as un-American, and how they devised counter-discourses in order to Americanize their ideas, sometimes leading to conflict and contradiction. How can the language of patriotism be combined with a belief in internationalism ? What coalitions, what political alliances can be built while maintaining a revolutionary stance ? How can the class struggle be rooted in a discourse on US-American society without succumbing to the sirens of exceptionalism ?

De Gruyter and the team of the Art Market Dictionary (AMD) are currently looking for authors interested in contributing to their encyclopedia project. The AMD is the first reference work providing encompassing information on commercial art galleries, dealers, auction houses, fairs and advisers in Europe, the USA and Canada in the 20th and 21st centuries. Due to appear in 2020, it will be published in print and as an online searchable database. It is edited by Johannes Nathan and supported by a number of specialized institutions such as the Getty Research Institute, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, or the Archives of American Art.
