  Training, educating, instructing in France, in the British Isles and in America in the 17th and 18th centuries

  These 2022 post-graduate study days set out to explore the broad range of the pedagogical theories and educative practices that were developed throughout the 17^th and 18^th centuries in the British Isles and in America. The three suggested semantic lines – training, educating, instructing – should allow for a cross-referencing of approaches on how knowledge was passed on from one generation to the next, from a teacher to a pupil or from a parent to a child. Though distinguishable from one another, the three terms stem from a same basis which establishes the relation between the learner and the instructor, but also between the learner and the object of his or her apprenticeship.

  Party Tourism

  “Journal of Festive Studies”, n°5

  This special issue of the Journal of Festive Studies is dedicated to Party tourism. While many types of festivities - religious celebrations, film festivals, and traditional local festivals - have been touristified over the last 150 years, what is generally referred to as “party tourism” (i.e, travel for which the main motivation is partying) is more specific. It involves one type of party that is usually urban, commodified and privatized, targets a young clientele, and centers on the massive consumption of psychoactive substances (alcoholic or otherwise). This phenomenon is often the subject of an approach focused on risks and conflicts between residents and partygoers, or between city officials and residents. While important to our discussion, these themes will not be central, so as to leave room for other, less-explored topics. This special issue wants to encourage a comprehensive approach to this phenomenon. It sits at the intersection between tourism studies and festive studies. We welcome contributions from various disciplinary fields and papers centering on nightlife economy in tourism, history representations and practices of party tourism and more.

  Traces et représentations du passé dans les monuments et le patrimoine, XIXe-XXIe siècle (Europe-Amérique latine)

  Les traces du passé constituent les buttes-témoins (des témoins) d’événements historiques à jamais révolus : elles rendent présent ce qui appartient au passé et l’incarnent de manière non intentionnelle. Elles sont parfois l’objet d’un réinvestissement symbolique qui les désigne en marques, caractérisées par une signature intentionnelle de la part d’un acteur identifiable. L’enjeu est ici d’historiciser les usages des traces et des monuments selon les périodes considérées et de les situer dans un contexte local précis afin d’en repérer d’éventuelles singularités. Le jeu des circulations, des imitations dans l’espace euro-américain fera l’objet d’une attention particulière.

  The Aristotelian “Mirabilia”

  This International Conference is entirely devoted to the Mirabilia, a collection attributed to Aristotle since Antiquity, which has probably be composed in the intellectual environment of the Peripatos. Our aim is to provide new insights into this little-known work, which is still historically the first example of what has been called Paradoxography. More precisely, the discussions will deal with the structure of the collection and its epistemology, with its relation to contemporary knowledge – from History to Literary Criticism –, and with its connection with the research led by Aristotle and his pupil Theophrastus.

  Les Vosges à l’heure des humanités environnementales

  Espaces de montagne, perspectives et enjeux

  Le massif des Vosges est un objet d’étude souvent sollicité tant par les chercheur·euses en sciences de la nature qu’en sciences humaines et sociales. Sans cesse questionnées sur leur caractère montagnard, marquées par une anthropisation plurimillénaire, les Vosges restent cependant, selon les mots de Georges Bischoff, un « objet historique mal identifié ». En donnant la parole aux jeunes chercheur·euses qui consacrent leurs travaux à cet espace, l’objectif de cette journée d’étude est de mettre en lumière la vigueur de cet objet d’étude. Cette journée proposera de réunir communicant·es et public à l’extérieur des campus, au plus près des terrains d’étude vosgiens. Afin de permettre aux propos tenus de s’incarner sur le terrain, la journée se terminera par des conférences marchées, qui rendront la parole scientifique à la fois plus concrète et plus conviviale. Les communications seront réalisées par de jeunes professionnel·les (doctorat, master ou post-doctorat).

  Après le symposium international De organis dédié à l’orgue roman (2018), les colloques sur les Percussions et flûtes tambourines médiévales (2019) et sur les Cornemuses (2021), il s’agira cette année de rassembler différents types de spécialistes autour des questions liées à la connaissance, au processus de restitution, à la facture, aux modes de jeu et aux fonctions sociales des instruments à cordes pincées. This panel will be focused on the circulation of contemporary spiritual practices and on their interconnections through transnational movements.   Patrimoines à vendre : fortunes et infortunes des biens religieux

  Héritage de l’Ancien Régime et du droit canonique, le principe d’inaliénabilité distingue un certain nombre de biens pour leur valeur d’art ou d’histoire, les soustrayant des échanges et du commerce, de façon à constituer le trésor que la nation se donne. Le patrimoine religieux semble plus qu’un autre concerné par ce type de disposition, cumulant d’une certaine manière deux types de sacralité, patrimoniale et religieuse. Pour autant, nombre de ces objets circulent, se vendent et se volent aussi, et alimentent un marché sur lequel tentent d’intervenir les pouvoirs publics, lesquels jouent les trouble-fêtes, saisissant les œuvres quand ils n’en revendiquent pas la restitution s’agissant de celles passées à l’étranger. Ces situations, que l’on se propose d’analyser au cours de ce colloque, ont à l’évidence beaucoup à nous apprendre sur la manière dont fait aujourd’hui sens, pour nos contemporains, le patrimoine.

  La pratique du vélo présente des avantages économiques, sanitaires, environnementales, etc. Après la marche, le vélo est le moyen de déplacement le moins onéreux. Il représente donc une chance pour la plupart des pays, notamment ceux situés en Afrique subsaharienne où les systèmes de transports connaissent un important retard. Cependant, son expansion fait face à de nombreuses contraintes d’ordre structurelles et sociales. C’est autour de cette réalité que le présent séminaire est organisé pour discuter des pratiques et contraintes du vélo dans plusieurs pays africains.

  This series of lectures aims at exploring how the grand narratives of architectural history are challenged by current concerns raised by colonial and postcolonial studies, gender studies, and the environmental humanities. From the Enlightenment to the present, the speakers will examine discourses which have impacted the very form of architecture, analysing the racial considerations that underlie the theory of styles, or investigating the role French and German colonizations in Africa played in the emergence of modern architecture.
