  Le génie est considéré depuis son origine comme une arme savante. Dès l'Antiquité, les soldats de l'armée romaine étaient des bâtisseurs autant que des guerriers. En France, les savoir-faire des ingénieurs du roi acquirent une grande renommée qui rayonna au-delà des frontières du royaume. Du Maréchal de Vauban au  général Du Portail, père du corps des ingénieurs américains au XVIII^e siècle, nombreux furent les sapeurs à se distinguer et à laisser en héritage des réalisations qui allaient bien au-delà des aspects militaires.

  War and the army - manufacturing the city - Antiquity, 21st century, Lorraine and Eastern France

  Antiquité - XXIe siècle, Lorraine et Grand-Est

  Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un cycle consacré aux Conflits, initié en 2014, en écho aux commémorations de la Grande Guerre, par le comité d’histoire régionale, service du conseil régional de Lorraine. Il a pour ambition d’aborder ce thème dans la diachronie (de l’Antiquité à nos jours) et aborde les conflits en tant que processus long, intégrant les temps de préparation ou de conflit larvé, l’éclatement et le déroulement de la guerre, et la période suivant le retour à la paix. Après un premier opus consacré aux conflits et progrès scientifiques et techniques, ce sont les relations entre conflits, urbanismes et territoires qui sont au cœur du présent colloque. Centrées sur le fait urbain, les problématiques peuvent toutefois être étendues aux territoires connectés à la ville ou aux relations entre agglomérations rurales, même modestes, et fait militaire.

  Historians have been conscious of the major importance of arsenals and for some time now have been interested in these establishments, for to study the arsenal is to understand the preparation made for war, a common and transversal thread of naval historiography. This unit also lends itself to "total history", that is simultaneously economic, social, financial, technological, industrial, geographical, strategic, maritime ... Naval arsenals are therefore well known and the study of them has mostly been carried out within the framework of major theses, each institution having found "its" historian.

  Civilians at stake: mass violence in Asia and Europe from 1931 to the present

  On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence has organized an international and interdisciplinary meeting. By bringing together key innovative specialists in philosophy, political science, law and history, the conference intends to reflect on the definition and role of civilians during mass violence. Civilians are understood here as victims of bombing or as actors resisting to ground-based mass violence. The meeting focuses on World War II as a touchstone period but also tries to assess its role in the longue durée up to the present. It takes the term “world war” literally, with special emphasis on the Asian continent, aiming at the opening of new horizons leading to more globally oriented research.

  The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has long constituted a classic component in academic histories of post-war Germany. After having been the subject of sustained scholarly attention in the 1970s and 1980s, the subject has subsequently faced a decline in academic interest. This two-day conference is intended to showcase new research and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies. We are inviting papers from both emerging scholars and established specialists.

  Natiolity in War (1789-1991)

  War, a time of exterior confrontation and interior reordering, is a critical moment when forms of social and national inclusion and exclusion are reconfigured. The nationality of individuals becomes a crucial issue, acquires a new meaning and takes on fresh theoretical, legal and practical dimensions. War also changes borders, resulting in the arrival or departure of populations, making questions of nationality an integral part of peace treaties. Outside periods of conflict, war influences representations and definitions of, as well as reflections on, nationality: whether the issue involves increasing population growth, rooting out “national evils”, tracking down domestic foes or defining loyalty and national dignity, the shadow of war always looms in the background. The symposium will focus on all these dimensions in the relationship between war and nationality during the contemporary age (1789-1991).

  At war with words

  Letters, journals and memories of soldiers, women and children during the First World War

  Quels sont les sentiments, les perceptions et les attitudes mentales des soldats, mais aussi des civils, des femmes, des enfants, durant la guerre ? Quelles sont leurs stratégies de résistance psychologique à cette déstabilisante expérience ? On peut tenter de répondre à ces questions en se tournant vers l'ample typologie de textes produits par les combattants et la population civile « mobilisée » : lettres, journaux et mémoires qui – encore en partie enfouis dans des tiroirs de famille ou conservés dans des archives d'écriture populaire – expriment des potentialités narratives considérables, mais revêtent aussi d'une part, un fort intérêt historiographique et linguistique. Ce colloque a pour but de se confronter aux questions méthodologiques encore ouvertes, présentant des textes particulièrement significatifs et des résultats de recherche dans ce domaine en croisant les approches scientifiques sur les écrits des soldats des divers fronts en Europe durant le conflit.

Nous interrogerons l’hypothèse selon laquelle, malgré l’apparence d’une universalité et d’une nécessité, la souveraineté cache en elle-même une faiblesse, à savoir le risque permanent de la crise. Nous étudierons à la fois les discontinuités entre les paradigmes de la philosophie politique, les oppositions entre doctrines, mais aussi l’ensemble des phénomènes qui manifestent une rupture de la légitimité du pouvoir.

  Resistance and Empire, new approaches and comparisons

  Since the early twentieth century, the notion of resistance became common currency in colonial language and anti-colonial ideologies to refer to military, political, and other forms of countering the authority of the colonizing institutions and agents in the colonies. After World War II and the boom of decolonization, it became an important tool in the critical and conceptual analysis of colonialism as a relationship of domination and opposition. Consequently, a wealth of studies was produced that focused on the ways though which indigenous people actively opposed, rebelled, or contested – militarily, politically, symbolically, culturally – the colonizing presence of Europeans. In the 1990s-2000s the validity of taking on “resistance” as a privileged concept and empirical topic was criticized for reducing the colonial phenomenon to a simplistic dichotomy – and since it appeared to have lost much of its early vitality in historical and anthropological research on empires and colonialism. Yet, since decolonization, ideas of “liberation” and anti-colonial resistance did not lose their significance as powerful tropes in retrospective nationalist readings of the birth of post- colonial nation-states. More recently, across the social sciences, “resistance” as a concept and a research trope seems to be revived, and a trans-disciplinary field of ‘resistance studies’ appears to come into emergence. What it means to study “resistance” both conceptually and comparatively in colonial and imperial history today?

  L’histoire de la Résistance en Seine Inférieure pendant la seconde guerre mondiale apparaît relativement moins connue que pour d’autres départements français. Sa mémoire semble également plus incertaine. Cette journée d’études vise à questionner cette lacune et à mieux comprendre cette postérité problématique. Réunissant les contributions de recherches récentes ou en cours, en France comme en Grande-Bretagne, la rencontre doit permettre aussi de nourrir le débat sur l’histoire de la Résistance engagé depuis longtemps des deux côtés de la Manche. La journée se propose ainsi de varier les approches les plus nouvelles et les plus établies de l’histoire de la Résistance, qui doivent permettre de contribuer à renouveler une histoire qui ne cesse d’évoluer avec son temps.

  The conference, organized by Centre d’histoire du XIXe siècle and Centre André Chastel, scheduled on June 16^th, 17^th and 18^th 2016 and will be devoted to examining the fate of those capitals that have been temporarily or permanently stripped of their status, alternative or provisional capitals and mobile forms of sovereignty, as well as the endurance of "capitalness", from a historical and history of art point of view. How does a city survive this political and administrative downgrading? What is the cultural impact of the loss of political "capitalness"? What role do historical capitals play in relation to capitals that boast their modernity? How are the transfers structured? How does the diplomatic community follow these changes? How does international recognition influence the persistency, or lack thereof, of "capitalness"?
