Ce cycle pluridisciplinaire, sous format de deux tables-rondes, ambitionne de regrouper sous forme d’un kaléidoscope, les communications de chercheurs d’horizons et de disciplines diversifiés (architecture, urbanisme, conservateur-restaurateur, sociologue, politicien, historien...), autour de la ville de Beyrouth. Cet appel à contribution s’adresse aux architectes, urbanistes, paysagistes, enseignants et chercheurs engagés par leurs enseignements, leurs pratiques et leurs recherches dans ces domaines, et désirant partager et mettre en débat leurs questionnements (théoriques, conceptuels et constructifs)

7th Graduate Student Workshop of Center for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan, and Central Asian Studies (CETOBaC)

This day will focus on the issues of production, use, and circulation of primary sources in our research areas. It will allow each participant to present their work, reflect collectively, discuss how we collect, produce, and classify our archives, and deal with their interpretation. It will also question the processes of archiving and the dynamics of conservation, patrimonialization, and destruction of archives as sociopolitical issues. Finally, by taking advantage of the diversity of the cultural areas studied, we will reflect on the transmission and circulation of sources in their temporal and spatial backgrounds.

From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East

In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

In this symposium, we aim to consider the religious figure of the animal in Islam, neither as an object of worship (an idol) nor a means of worshipping (sacrificial offering), but rather as a fully-fledged subject, a worshipper of God and a model for all worshippers. What are the origin and theological posterity of verses like, “Do you not see that God is glorified by all those in the heavens and the earth, even birds in rows?” (24:41) What does believing in animal worship of God imply for the definition of religion itself?

Intimacies under Tension from, and In, the Arab-Muslim Worlds

Since the advent of the affective turn, when the humanities and social sciences began to pay increased attention to the objectification of emotions, studies on the “intimate” have increased exponentially. As an analytical category, intimacy allows to question dominant and normative visions of the private and the public spheres, and to understand how they are reproduced, challenged, and/or transgressed. Intimacy can therefore be considered as a political process. By encouraging the exploration of new methods of field research, this issue of L’Année du Maghreb is also opening up to “alternative” forms of ethnographic restitution.

This conference will focus on Arab crime films and TV series, by which are meant, broadly, works of fiction centering on crimes, criminals and criminal investigations (by law enforcement agencies or ordinary citizens), from the beginning of Arab cinema to the present. The aim of the conference is to study these crime dramas in their historical contexts of production and reception and to reflect on the multiple dimensions – narrative, cultural, social, legal, political, etc. – of crime and, where appropriate, of criminal investigations in Arab movies/shows.

From one crisis to another: politics, Russia-Ukraine war, Covid-19 and the future of tourism

Post Crisis Tourism: Resilience, Transformation, or Evolution?

The covid-19 pandemic has plummeted the tourism sector into a serious and unprecedented crisis. For the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) the covid-19 pandemic is «by far the most serious crisis that international tourism has faced since records began (1950) [...] The impact will be felt to varying degrees in different regions of the world." In the first three months of 2020, the tourism industry lost $80 billion, and several million jobs are at risk. As we begin to talk about decontamination, Global tourism may be facing a new challenge: the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. From soaring oil prices to sanctions, declining tourist numbers, etc., the escalating conflict in Ukraine will have an impact on tourism. Thus, after the coronavirus crisis, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is becoming a new challenge for the tourism sector. Several questions arise that we would like to explore. Rather than adopting a developmental approach, we propose to adopt a reflexive approach instead. The expected contributions will combine empirical work and theoretical reflections and can be anchored in a variety of disciplinary fields in the humanities and social sciences.

The public space and private spaces in the light of the Arab Spring

À rebours des représentations officielles, médiatiques et néo-orientalistes de la division entre espace public et espace(s) privé(s), l’objectif de ce huitième colloque du Cerle des chercheurs sur le Moyen-Orient (CCMO) est d’analyser leurs chevauchements, leurs imbrications et leurs interactions, voire leur caractère interchangeable. Un espace privé est susceptible, à tout moment, de se muer en espace public et inversement, un espace public pouvant épouser des logiques de privatisation et d’appropriation particulariste par un clan, une milice, une faction ou encore des groupes porteurs de causes spécifiques liées au genre, à la classe d’âge, à l’origine sociale ou encore à l’appartenance locale. Ce colloque invite à complexifier et à déconstruire cette opposition rigide entre espace public au singulier et espaces privés au pluriel, en interrogeant notamment la manière dont le politique se déploie dans des espaces privés ou semi-privés.

Du dernier quart du XX^e siècle à aujourd’hui, les sociétés arabes n’ont de cesse de provoquer des crises puis de lutter pour les surmonter, se réformer, s’adapter et se réinventer, tantôt en s’inspirant des traditions les mieux ancrées, tantôt en empruntant des éléments exogènes, tantôt enfin en créant et innovant, par déformation, dénaturation, travestissement, caricature, ou parodie. L’inventivité et la créativité dont font preuve romanciers, poètes, artistes ou anonymes mobilisés pour défendre la liberté ou lutter contre toute forme de discrimination ou de dictature confèrent à l’engagement critique dans le monde arabe une réelle efficacité, souvent redoutée, parfois jusqu’à la censure

Economic elites and power in the age of post-2011 upheavals: reconfigurations in relationships and variations in models?

Les soulèvements qui ont secoué les régions d’Afrique du Nord et du Moyen-Orient depuis 2010 portent des revendications de justice sociale et de participation ainsi qu’un rejet des anciennes élites associées à la corruption et à l’autoritarisme. Dans quelle mesure ces revendications sont-elles repérables dans les configurations élitaires de ces sociétés, en particulier en ce qui concerne les rapports entre acteurs économiques et pouvoir politique ? L’analyse des recompositions élitaires dans le contexte post-2011 fait état tant d’une reproduction des élites économiques liées aux régimes autoritaires que d’un processus de renouvellement de celles-ci. Elle nous invite à revisiter la question des liens entre champ économique et pouvoir politique. À quelles transformations du rapport entre élites économiques et pouvoir politique les changements à l’œuvre conduisent-ils ? Les articles contribueront aux analyses des structures élitaires des sociétés d’Afrique du Nord et du Moyen-Orient par le prisme des fragmentations, des alliances et des conflictualités que l’on observe entre les catégories anciennes et nouvelles d’acteurs d’accumulation et d’exercice du pouvoir depuis 2011. Il s’agit d’élucider quelle rupture historique ces soulèvements ont représenté et dans quelle mesure l’hypothèse d’une restructuration de ces sociétés et de leurs régimes peut être formulée.

Jews of the Arab world, why did they leave?

Dans la seconde moitié du XX^e siècle, la quasi-totalité des populations juives ont quitté le monde arabe, dans un contexte de bouleversements entraînés notamment par la destruction des juifs d’Europe, la création de l’État d’Israël, la décolonisation et les guerres israélo-arabes. Les causes et les circonstances de ces émigrations, complexes et très diverses selon les pays, restent mal connues, mal comprises, et donnent lieu à des instrumentalisations de tous bords. Ce colloque se propose de rouvrir le dossier du départ des juifs du monde arabe dans une perspective comparatiste et ouverte aux spécialistes internationaux, à distance des usages politiques de l’histoire, pour dresser un état des lieux des connaissances sur la question.
