Les universités du bloc de l’Est comme lieu de rencontre de la jeunesse internationale pendant la guerre froide

Cette journée d’études sur la mobilité étudiante s’inscrit dans le tournant transnational de la recherche sur la guerre froide qui, depuis quelques années, met en avant une certaine perméabilité du rideau de fer. Elle met l’accent sur les circulations transnationales des étudiantes et étudiants. Elle se concentrera plus particulièrement sur les universités de l’Est comme lieu de sociabilité et de brassage culturel et comme lieu de rencontre de la jeunesse. Elle s’intéressera aux enjeux, aux modalités de ces rencontres pour comprendre leur impact sur les trajectoires personnelles de ces jeunes à un moment où se forgent l’identité et l’orientation professionnelle.

La philosophie et la question nationale

Prenant comme point de départ l’idée, proposée par Jacques Derrida, de « nationalisme philosophique », ce séminaire a pour but d’interroger la manière dont les différents discours nationaux et nationalistes ont accompagné tant la construction de l’historiographie philosophique moderne que le développement de la philosophie comparée ou interculturelle. La division du monde en « nations philosophiques » constitue aujourd’hui encore le point de départ de tout effort comparatiste et conduit à faire du « dialogue entre traditions » un discours tendant à légitimer les idéologies nationales.

Ukrainian music beyond borders: a study of its reception before and after 2024

This international symposium will examine the reception of musical works by Ukrainian composers in artistic institutions (such as Philharmonics, concert halls, artistic centers and festivals) and in the press (both specialized and non-specialized) since 2014. Does the perception of Ukrainian music differ between Ukraine and abroad? If so, what makes this difference? Reflections will integrate various European countries such as England, Germany, the Czech Republic and France, as well as in non-European countries.

La parution récente (début juin 2024) du t. II/4 du Catalogue des manuscrits conservés de l’ancienne bibliothèque de Clairvaux est l’occasion de faire le point sur la catalographie des manuscrits latins à l’IRHT. Les conditions de travail, les outils à la disposition des rédacteurs mais aussi du public, le ou les publics et leurs attentes, les conditions techniques de l’alternative entre catalogue sur papier et base de données en ligne, le besoin de normalisation, ne sont plus forcément les mêmes qu’au moment de la réactivation du projet Clairvaux, en 2007. Quelles sont les problématiques aujourd'hui et l'avenir de ce type de chantier ?

Elle vise à questionner le sens et la nature des carcéralités politiques selon les types de régimes ou les périodes ; le rôle de leurs acteurs, qu’il s’agisse en premier lieu des prisonniers politiques ou des administrations et des pouvoirs politiques à l’origine de ces mises en détention ; la place des lieux ou anciens lieux de captivité comme espace de politisation ou comme source d’identité politique et/ou de conflits mémoriels ; les productions politiques en milieu carcéral.

Working Group on ‘Risk, Health, and State Socialism: Central and Eastern Europe, 1950s-1980s’

While much of this historiography has focused on liberal democracies, less attention has been given to how concepts of risk operated in state socialist contexts. Building on recent studies in the history of medicine and health, we invite scholars to join a working group examining risk, health, and medicine under state socialism in Central and Eastern Europe. To what extent did state socialist regimes recognize certain health and medical issues as ‘governable’ through risk? What kinds of practices and ideas emerged in response? And were there differences or similarities between state socialist and liberal democratic models of risk in healthcare and medicine? Our aim is to take an exploratory approach to discuss whether, and in what contexts, the concept of risk can be applied to state socialism, and to examine the risk-related practices, ideas, and technologies observed in healthcare and medicine in state socialism.

Implosion des empires et frontières

1914-2024

Le XX^e siècle a vu l’écroulement brutal de trois empires dont les signes de faiblesse étaient cependant de plus en plus évidents : l'empire austro-hongrois, l'empire ottoman puis l'URSS. La première guerre mondiale a été fatale au camp des vaincus parmi lesquels se trouvaient les deux premiers. Ces opérations de dislocation, les deux premières datant d’un siècle, la troisième plus récente, ont laissé derrière elles des bombes à retardement dont certaines ont contribué au désordre international, voire aux guerres d’aujourd’hui. Le retour des guerres balkaniques, l’agression russe contre l’Ukraine et la Géorgie, le conflit du Haut Karabakh, la question palestinienne et la guerre à Gaza ont leurs racines dans la façon dont ont été tracées « des lignes dans le sable » lors de l’implosion des empires. Comprendre les motivations des politiques qui ont démantelé les empires et envisager les autres scénarios qui auraient été possibles permettrait-il d’apaiser les conflits potentiels ou actifs d’aujourd’hui ?

This conference is therefore intended to analyze the Thirty Years War from a polycentric perspective that is focused on the evolution and the impact of the contemporary news market. Contributions most welcome being concerned with the entanglement of regional conflicts, the polycentric character of the war, the analysis of the war news market, the development of narratives that had an impact on the behavior of the contemporaries, their self-perception and their attitude towards the military conflicts.

Séminaire franco-allemand sur l’histoire de l’époque moderne : Frontières, limites et transgressions

Le département d’histoire moderne de l’Institut historique allemand (IHA) à Paris, l’Institut Franco-Allemand (IFRA) et le Centre de Recherche en Histoire Européenne Comparée (CRHEC) invitent à participer au "Séminaire franco-allemand sur l’histoire de l’époque moderne". Le séminaire est animé par Christine Zabel, Falk Bretschneider et Marie-Karine Schaub. Nous y discutons des projets actuels de la recherche particulièrement sur l’histoire allemande et française. Cette année, le séminaire se concentrera sur la gestion des frontières. Les analyses porteront sur les frontières concrètes d’un point de vue culturel, économique ou politique, mais aussi sur les frontières géographiques et sur les acteurs les plus divers.

Cette journée d’étude se propose de s’interroger sur des questions qui concernent la préhistoire et l’histoire des revues européennes de slavistique : leurs fondateurs, leur évolution, leurs mutations et objectifs passés et actuels.

Research topic for Visegrad Scholarship at Open Society Archives Academic (OSA) year 2024/2025

The criticism about infringements of academic freedom, or about the radicalization of autocratic powers cannot do without an understanding of the loaded vocabularies of freedoms in the past and present, for both societies and their elites. A complex rethinking and recontextualization of the thinkers of liberties, including from the Cold War era, must also be undertaken, together with the truth-seeking adventures and projects from the past. We invite historians, researchers, political scientists, sociologists and socially engaged artists to reflect on the past uses of the languages of (attaining) freedoms by taking cues from the Blinken OSA collections. The applicants are encouraged to reflect on the connections as well as on the differences between current times and the past by following some recommended sub-topics listed below.

We are interested in articles that shed light on the visual culture of the former Habsburg Empire and Central Europe broadly defined from the medieval period to the present. Contributions that position Austrian art practices within a wider international framework are particularly welcome. We value innovative art historical approaches, such as challenging established narratives or exploring transnational exchanges that highlight the interconnected and cross-cultural nature of the art world. The Belvedere Research Journal is also keen to feature work on artists and figures who have been historically underrepresented, with a special emphasis on women. We encourage interdisciplinary research that blends art history with methodologies from other fields, such as digital humanities, social sciences, and cultural economics.

2025 Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe

The Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe (SISECSE) is a two-week residential workshop, that provides scholars of Eastern Europe time and space to dedicate to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in a series of immersive discussions on a broad topic of shared academic interest. In 2025, discussions will explore “Epistemic Mistrust: Authorship, Credibility, and Knowledge Production.” Whether in times of crisis and war, or times of peace and stability, who do we trust to tell the truth? Whose stories do we listen to? With a growing lack of trust in traditional sources of knowledge—including suspicion of academic institutions—public confidence in the value of research is eroding. Nevertheless, humanistic approaches are essential for fostering critical thinking and promoting interdisciplinary dialogue.

De la parole au corps du monde. Lorand Gaspar à la croisée des langues, des cultures et des disciplines

Lauréat des très prestigieux prix Guillaume Apollinaire (1967) et Goncourt de la poésie (1998), Lorand Gaspar, poète, traducteur, historien, photographe mais aussi remarquable médecin chirurgien, voit le jour le 28 février 1925. Située au confluent des cultures et des disciplines, l’œuvre de cet écrivain francophone aux origines transylvaines a déjà suscité l’intérêt de nombreux chercheurs et plusieurs travaux universitaires lui ont été consacrés, dont une partie importante s’est constituée par le biais des nombreuses traductions réalisées à partir de et par Gaspar lui-même. Nous proposons aux personnes intéressées (spécialistes de l’auteur, critiques historiens, poètes, traducteurs, médecins, etc.) un colloque qui aura lieu dans sa ville d’origine : Târgu-Mureş.

For our current issue of Musicologica Olomucensia we are looking for articles focusing on diverse aspects of Eastern European musical culture (defined by the territory of post-communist European states). We welcome historical probes into the musical culture of the region as well as interdisciplinary reflections on contemporary phenomena, with overlaps into music sociology, cultural studies, popular music studies, ethnomusicology, and topics such as music and politics, music and national identity, or music and gender. We welcome a comprehensive approach that compares the issues of individual states in the region and places them on the West-East axis. Likewise, we favour a wide range of issues related to Czech (Czechoslovak) musical culture.

Revue « Europe : cultures, mémoires, identités » no. 1 / 2025 (premier numéro)

This journal is especially devoted to the study of the dynamics of memories and of cultural identity representations which have shaped the spaces of experience, the horizons of expectation, and the sociocultural imaginaries in “Europe’s Europes” in the 20^th and 21^st centuries. It provides a special outlet to the analysis grounded in cultural memory studies, and particularly in contemporary theories of “agonistic memory”, considered as a “third way”, that of the research of an equilibrium between the contraries embodied in the two competitive paradigms which have disputed their hegemony in the European area, particularly since the end of the Cold War: the cosmopolitan/ transnational one, and the national(ist)/ antagonistic one.
