Between variability and singularity: crossing theoretical, qualitative and computer-based approaches to types and typologies in archaeology

Call for paper EAA 2021

This session is based on the ambition to revisit the "type" as an analytical and theoretical concept inorder to re-activate type-sensitive archaeological research or to develop genuine alternatives. We invite scholars from varying backgrounds to interrogate our apprehension of types, and to re-consider the basic explanatory value of types andtypologies, especially so vis-à-vis computer-based methods, emerging theoretical frameworks and, more generally, the consequences of such approaches and research frameworks for our understanding of types and typological thinking as core concepts ofarchaeological practice.

History of measuring and calculations in archaeology

In archaeology, quantitative approaches have a long tradition and belong to the very core of the discipline. However, the history of quantitative archaeological reasoning might be not as straight forward as suggested by the disciplinary history commonlys hared among archaeologists. Taken into account different social interests and traditions we doubt the narrative of linear methodological and technical progress, especially considering to a certain extent alternative developments of quantitative approaches inblocks of countries somewhat separated by language barriers. Different communities assign different roles and functions to quantitative procedures applied in archaeology. This session aims to explore the multitude of factors that determine the development ofquantitative archaeology.

The Summer Academy aims to explore the relationship between work and sustainability along four thematic axes: Sustainable Work and Ecology, Sustainable Work and Democracy, Sustainable Work and Social Welfare as well as Sustainable Work and Economic Development.

Five research assistant positions for the project "Decoding Antisemitsm"

For a 3-year research project on anti-semitic hate speech and hate images on the internet, research assistants are wanted. A qualitative linguistic content analysis of social media comments and analysis of image material and text-image relationships related to antisemitic content is planned. In addition, quantitative linguistic methods will also be applied to the social media corpus. For the country teams we are seeking two doctoral students for the English language area, two for the French language area and one for the German language area.

Two post-doctoral positions for the projet "Decoding Antisemitism"

In the three-year pilot project "Identifying the Real Dimension of Antisemitism 2.0 in Europe", an international research team will investigate antisemitic language and image use on news websites and social media platforms of the political mainstream in three European countries (Germany, Great Britain and France). First, the object of investigation is analysed in detail. In the second step, all of the examined phenomena are investigated in their breadth by means of quantitative analyses. Main tasks of the post-doctoral positions will be, on one hand, the qualitative linguistic content analysis of social media comments and analysis of image material and text-image relationships in relation to antisemitic content; on the other hand, the application of quantitative linguistic methods to the social media corpus.

Nouvelles figures de l'auteur dans la littérature contemporaine de langues romanes

La question du rapport qu'entretient l'auteur·e à son œuvre a récemment bénéficié d'un fort éclairage médiatique dans le sillage des affaires concernant Gabriel Matzneff ou Roman Polanski. L'exigence méthodologique voulant que l'on sépare l'œuvre et l'auteur est désormais remise en cause par ceux qui y voient une sorte d'acceptation des relations de pouvoir en vigueur. Commentant le « scandale Polanski », Virginie Despentes en appelle à une nouvelle morale auctoriale. Le public contribue lui-même à façonner le nouvel « auteur responsable » dès lors qu'il refuse de prendre part aux vieilles mises en scène : « Maintenant on se lève et on se casse », répète Despentes. À travers toutes ces polémiques, ne s'agit-il pas d'attribuer une nouvelle place médiatique, morale, théorique et même géographique à cette figure de l'auteur qui trônait au-dessus des foules anonymes ?

Congrès de l'Association pour l'étude des littératures africaines (APELA)

Ce congrès propose une exploration des littératures, du cinéma et des arts performatifs africains de toutes les langues et de toutes les régions d’Afrique y compris le Maghreb et les diasporas, au prisme des théories, activismes et esthétiques queer. Il s’agira tout autant d’aborder un corpus encore peu usité dans la recherche francophone, que d’analyser le lien entre esthétique, savoir et activisme dans le contexte des luttes pour la reconnaissance des homo- et transsexuels et d’autres minorités sexuelles et de genre en Afrique.

Scholarships in Berlin - Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives

The Study Foundation of the House of Representatives is a grant programme for young researchers from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the successor states of the Soviet Union, who want either to work on Berlin along with German as well as German-international issues or to use research facilities in Berlin. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives shall contribute to the further development of a generation of young scholars from the aforementioned states whose research issues deal with Berlin or Germany. Moreover, the young researchers shall use their stay in Berlin in order to make themselves familiar with the political and social system in Berlin and Germany, and build lasting relationships between themselves and with the Berlin House of Representatives. Thus, the Foundation seeks to awaken or strengthen long-term interest in and understanding of Germany in the aforementioned states.

Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960

Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

Ist es möglich, den Begriff der masse zu verwenden, ohne in eine vollständige Verurteilung des kollektiven Handelns oder in eine unreflektierte Aufwertung zu verfallen? Sollten wir immer noch an der Opposition zwischen der Masse und dem Individuum festhalten? Das Verhältnis zwischen Masse und Individuum kann unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten untersucht werden: Wie kann eine Masse sich als politisches Subjekt konstituieren? Mit welchen Mitteln und aus welchen Perspektiven stellen künstlerische Werke die Beziehung zwischen der Masse und dem Individuum dar und wie verändern sie diese? Welche Umgestaltungen erfährt die Masse als Objekt der Sozialwissenschaften? Wie wirkt sich die kapitalistische Moderne auf die moralische und psychische Autonomie der Individuen aus?

This two-day workshop, to be held in Berlin, aims to bring together doctoral students, post-doctoral students and experienced researchers working on the history of solidarity and humanitarian engagement in the countries of the Global South, from the 1960s to the 1980s, in the context of decolonization and the Cold War. On the one hand, it offers the opportunity to present and discuss current research. On the other hand, based on these concrete examples, it wishes to offer a space for exchange and discussion on the theoretical and methodological dimensions of this research field.

Le harcèlement professionnel

Comparaison franco-allemande

Quels sont les outils juridiques mobilisés pour lutter contre le harcèlement professionnel ? Comment les juges les mettent-ils en œuvre ? Les différences observables sont-elles le fruit de l'histoire juridique nationale ou la conséquence d'un contexte socio-économique particulier ? Ces questions seront abordés dans un cadre comparatif franco-allemand lors de trois étapes successives. La première consistera à identifier les notions juridiques utilisées et à clarifier le vocabulaire. La seconde portera sur les obligations de l'employeur en matière de harcèlement. La troisième aura trait au mécanisme probatoire spécifique utilisé en matière de harcèlement. Lors de chacune de ces étapes, un binôme franco-allemand effectuera une présentation du thème étudiée, qui sera suivie d'échanges entre les participants.

Die Tagung präsentiert und diskutiert erste Ergebnisse der nun wieder möglichen wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Materialität der Handschrift, ihrem Produktionszusammenhang und dem Buchmarkt am Oberrhein, für den sie produziert wurde. Forschung und interessierte Öffentlichkeit sind herzlich dazu eingeladen.

Es hat bislang nur wenige Untersuchungen gegeben, die der Beziehung zwischen Nietzsche und dem französischen Existenzialismus nachgehen. Das Symposium will diese Forschungslücke schließen unter Einbeziehung aller relevanten Disziplinen (Philosophie, Literaturwissenschaft, Ideengeschichte …). Beiträge können sich etwa mit biographischen Aspekten beschäftigen (Inwieweit haben die französischen Existenzialisten Nietzsche wirklich gelesen?), mit philosophischen Vergleichen oder auch mit Fragen, die die systematische Aktualität der zur Diskussion stehenden Thesen und Themen betreffen. Wir bemühen uns um die Abdeckung der Reise- und Übernachtungskosten für die Referenten, können sie jedoch zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt nicht garantieren.
