Mobility in the History of Africa
Revisiting the “Mobility Turn”
This year, the Summer University of the German Historical Institute is focussing on the possibilities and challenges of the “Mobility Turn” in African history. We will analyse different forms of mobility and their spatial, political, social, cultural and ecological consequences. Connections between social, cultural, technological and environmental history will be worked out and the spatial order of Africa and its constant change through African mobilities will be scrutinised from a historical perspective.

Logiques urbaines et architecturales, matérielles et immatérielles, perspectives de protection et d’évolution (XIXe-XXIe siècle)
La Ville de Bordeaux, Bordeaux Métropole, l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Toulouse, le centre de recherche en histoire de l’art François Pariset et la Maison des sciences de l’homme d’Aquitaine organisent les 17 et 18 octobre prochains, deux journées d'étude consacrées aux patrimoines sportifs, matériels et immatériels. Elles ont pour objectifs d’explorer les logiques urbaines et architecturales qui conduisent à patrimonialiser les lieux et les pratiques sportives dans la période contemporaine (XIXe-XXe siècle), toutes aires géographiques confondues, en s’attachant surtout à la construction des récits et à la formation des symboles bâtis des sports, quotidiens ou spectaculaires.

Orgues et organistes en France de l’Ancien Régime à la Révolution
Quatorzième rencontre du réseau Muséfrem
La base Muséfrem a permis de repérer de nombreux organistes – hommes et femmes, puisque l’éloignement du chœur de l’instrument à tuyaux, généralement perché sur une tribune, autorise cette fonction musicale aux musiciennes, quel que soit le statut de l’église – au service de cathédrales, de collégiales, de paroisses ou d’établissements réguliers. Grâce à ce corpus, encore incomplet mais déjà imposant, il est possible d’étudier les origines, la formation, les situations professionnelles et familiales de ces instrumentistes particuliers. Cette journée d’étude souhaite croiser les approches historique et musicologique, à travers l’exploration des instruments, des hommes et femmes, et des œuvres, tels qu’ils se révèlent dans les archives, les collections musicales, les catalogues, les périodiques ou le patrimoine organistique conservé.

In this beautiful spring, when the Italian seas become crowded with migrants in search of a land to build on – and not all of them survive – we propose to discuss the relationship between architecture and roots: whether they are understood in ideal, metaphorical terms; or in material, practical ones, referring to the complex but often original and fruitful experience of architecture made far from one’s own homeland.

The suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773 marks the last step of the Order’s progressive dissolution initiated fifteen years earlier, in Europe and in its colonies. This act of suppression was the culmination of a broader secularisation movement concerning religious congregations across Europe, from the 1760s to the French Revolution. Whether driven by reformatory or by economic interests, all acts of suppression and secularisation had the same consequences: a large number of movable assets and real property, estates and art works were either reallocated to other religious congregations or put on sale, when not confiscated altogether. Several studies have already investigated the dispersal of abolished congregations’ assets in different parts of Enlightened Europe, but a broader overview is yet to be drawn.

Lapidariums. Precious sources for the history of a monument and its sculpted decoration
"In Situ" Journal n°53 – 2025
The French term ‘dépôt lapidaire’, a lapidary depot, rendered here as a lapidarium, is understood to mean collections of archaeological or architectural fragments and pieces of sculpture, assembled so as to maintain an organic link with the monument or the site they come from. The time seems to be ripe, then, as the topic as a whole takes on numerous forms, to draw up a general, if provisional analysis of the situation. It seems useful to think about how best to share information coming from different sectors (historic monuments, archaeology, museums and parks and gardens). New lines of action can perhaps be sketched out for a new phase for these very special cultural properties, located at the frontiers between the movable and immovable heritage.

Global and historical perspectives
How do land reforms affect land access and property rights? Who are the actors of these transformations? Does such evolution contribute to the commodification and financialization of land? How do urban regulations produce informalities and affect socio-spatial dynamics? This half-day thematic seminar seeks to delve into these key questions with two roundtables. Aiming to inform today’s urban transformations through law and history, the six presentations will cover different contexts as diverse as Istanbul, Northern Italy, rural China, Madrid, and colonial Bombay, spanning from the 14th century to today.

La multiplication des friches industrielles, le brutal retour des frappes militaires massives sur les villes, l’inquiétude face aux risques que l’anthropocène fait courir au maintien des modes de vie urbains actuels, peuvent expliquer l’attention accrue portée aux ruines et à leurs usages.

Post-doctorat sur « Les bibliothèques publiques des Lumières »
Au XVIIIe siècle, on dénombre près de 70 fondations de bibliothèques publiques en France, qui entendent répondre, à des degrés divers, à l'exigence d'un « service public » et à une demande de consommation intellectuelle croissante dans les villes d'Ancien Régime, en province comme à Paris. Dans le cadre d'un projet qui entend produire un inventaire détaillé des fondations de bibliothèques publiques et des sources qui les documentent (catalogues, bâtiments, personnel, circonstances de fondation...), l'appui d'un ou d'une chercheur(e) post-doctorant(e) permettra de coordonner le travail de repérage et d'analyse d'archives, en particulier dans la partie Nord de la France. La personne recrutée sera amenée à enrichir les données recueillies dans le cadre de ce projet, mais aussi à participer aux travaux de pilotage du projet, et enfin à valoriser ses recherches par les canaux propres au projet ou par d’autres moyens.

Cette journée cherchera à interroger la place et le rôle des « personnalités » à l’échelle locale : épouse de maire, grand patron, médecin, homme politique, ouvriers autant de figures qui ont marqué la vie à l’échelle locale, organisé les formes de sociabilités et généré une littérature les encensant ou les critiquant. Ces personnalités locales peuvent être définies comme des individus à la position morale forte, dont la légitimité est acquise par reconnaissance au sein d’un groupe ou d’une communauté, et alliant valeurs locales et universelles.

Black Sea archaeology has always captivated the interest of scholars, because of its unique topography and diachronically multi-ethnic historical landscape.The previous decade was a particularly challenging period for archaeological research worldwide due to the new realities imposed by the pandemic, the extraordinary political and socio-economic factors, and the long-lasting crisis in the Humanities and Arts. In spite of all this, excavations, systematic surveys, remote sensing and geophysical prospections, were undertaken in numerous coastal and inland sites along the Euxine, while equally productive were research projects on specific monuments or aspects of the material culture. Aiming to bring forth the latest advances accomplished in the field, the Department of Black Sea Studies at the Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, are organizing an International Conference on The Archaeological Work in the Greek Settlements of the BlackSea and their Environs during the Last Decade.

Local powers toward central authorities: Decision-making process in medieval urban societies

The scientific summit is dedicated to bringing together different specialists who analyse the discursivities of decision-making developed in medieval towns and other local instances of political governance. The goal of this seminar is centred in exploring the dynamics between the local and the central spheres of power, following an understanding on how those dynamics build their communication strategies from communal institutions side to interact with —or, even though, resist to— their so-called sovereign authorities. These communication channels often operated networks of semantic change between the local spheres, where political decisions were performed, and the higher spheres with jurisdictional power over them.

L’objet de cette journée d’étude sera double. Il s’agira de tenter d’identifier les espaces/interstices visibles et invisibles, parfois fugaces et insaisissables, qu’occupe le religieux (les lieux de culte, soupes populaires, lectures bibliques, école du dimanche, le cyberespace, etc.) dans les zones urbaines ; tout en interrogeant les stratégies et la créativité des acteurs des missions religieuses et spirituelles qui s’efforcent de rendre visible le religieux dans l’espace urbain. Inversement, quels espaces les acteurs institutionnels, politiques, économiques et sociaux octroient-ils (ou sont-ils prêts à octroyer) au religieux ?

Les villes de l'Antiquité tardive à l'épreuve d'une analyse comparée
Écrire l’histoire des villes de l’Antiquité tardive est un exercice difficile. Leurs vestiges ont longtemps été négligés et leur histoire mal comprise. Fort heureusement depuis quelques décennies, l’intérêt des chercheurs s’est porté avec une attention renouvelée sur cet objet de recherche, grâce à de nouvelles lectures et interprétation des sources ainsi qu’au développement des recherches archéologiques. Une telle dynamique a conduit à une croissance considérable de la documentation. La comparaison effectuée sur la base d’études de cas délimitées sur le plan géographique, temporel et thématique, et de ce fait présentant une nette identité structurelle, permet d’identifier des similitudes ou des différences. Ce sont justement ces dernières, ces particularités inattendues, qui recèlent un potentiel de connaissances, car elles suscitent des questionnements concernant les conditions de leur apparition, les raisons de leur évolution et leur détermination finale.

Inventer / inverser le Grand Paris
Vers une nouvelle histoire des métropoles ?
Le moment politique initié par la Consultation internationale du Grand Paris de 2008 a constitué une opportunité exceptionnelle de relance des travaux sur l’histoire de la métropole francilienne. La recherche ne pouvait qu’interroger les discours de rupture diffusés par les décideurs, les aménageurs et les médias. C’est dans cet esprit que s’est formé le collectif de recherche « Inventer le Grand Paris ». Pourquoi adjoindre le terme « inverser » ? D’une part, les travaux du collectif ont conduit à déplacer l’attention vers des approches plurielles du Grand Paris. D’autre part, la montée en puissance des préoccupations environnementales, de la conscience patrimoniale, de l’intérêt pour les usagers ou acteurs au rôle jusqu’ici minoré, ou pour l’histoire située, constituent autant d’invitations à décentrer le regard pour saisir le fait métropolitain.
