  The Nuremberg Trials

  New approaches in social history and the sociology of professions

  Until now, research focused mainly on the preparation, implementation, and conclusion of the Nuremberg Trials, as well as on the role they played in the postwar period, particularly with respect to the denazification of Germany and the formation of the memory of Nazism. New approaches have been developed, however, inspired by the sociology of professions and international organizations on the one hand and by the social history of post-war period on the other hand. These studies focus on the staff mobilized during these trials, the internationalization of various fields of expertise dedicated to peace building, and the long-term transformation of professional cultures to which these trials have contributed. Bringing together academics from different countries and disciplines, the workshop aims to provide a forum for such studies and to discuss new avenues of research.

  The secret service and the pre-Great War period - Sarre, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Belgium

  L’histoire du renseignement apporte un éclairage nouveau au fonctionnement des relations internationales. Alors que son impact dans la première guerre mondiale reste encore largement ignoré des publications sur le centenaire de ce conflit, il apparaît opportun de réunir les meilleurs spécialistes de cette question dans les pays de la Grande Région (Sarre, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Belgique) pour évoquer un aspect encore marginalement étudié : l’avant-guerre dans cet espace géographique. Des révélations du plan Schlieffen au printemps 1904 jusqu’aux prodromes de la bataille des frontières à l’été 1914, cette période permet d’approcher le renseignement selon un angle moins monographique qu’en suivant les pratiques qui fondent l’action des services de renseignement.

Les organismes d’assurance maladie de la région ont décidé de réaliser la même d’étude, au niveau régional, en 2015. Pour mener à bien ce projet, chaque organisme recrute un chargé d’étude qualitative, en contrat à durée déterminée, du 31 mars au 20 septembre 2015.

  Nationality in war (1789-1991)

  War, a time of exterior confrontation and interior reordering, is a critical moment when forms of social and national inclusion and exclusion are reconfigured. The nationality of individuals becomes a crucial issue, acquires a new meaning and takes on fresh theoretical, legal and practical dimensions. War also changes borders, resulting in the arrival or departure of populations, making questions of nationality an integral part of peace treaties. Outside periods of conflict, war influences representations and definitions of, as well as reflections on, nationality: whether the issue involves increasing population growth, rooting out “national evils”, tracking down domestic foes or defining loyalty and national dignity, the shadow of war always looms in the background. The symposium will focus on all these dimensions in the relationship between war and nationality during the contemporary age (1789-1991), which for our purposes can be divided into three periods.

  Journalist of the European Union: Which role in policy-making process?

  IPA 2015 10th international conference in Interpretative Policy analysis – Panel n°32

  This panel aims at studying the link between the EU policy making and the media sphere. Most of the academic works dealing with media issues focus on the European Union coverage and its effects on public attitude (and votes). For example, N. GAVIN studies the role played by economic information on TV in England. C. De Vreese describes the characteristics of news about European affairs in a comparative study of the editorial policies of news organizations in Britain, Denmark, and the Netherlands. He investigates the effects of television news on public opinion formation. He questions also whether the framing of EU news benefits more to the European institutions or the citizens . The journalists’ role in policy making is less studied.

  À l'automne 2013, Matignon publiait cinq rapports sur l'intégration dont les propositions provoquèrent de vives réactions de tous bords. Anti-françaises pour certains, anti-républicaines pour d'autres, trop ambitieuses pour les partisans d'une approche progressive, les suggestions des rapports semblent être restées lettre morte. Un an après, il est temps de s’interroger sur l'état des pratiques institutionnelles eu égard à la diversité culturelle et les raisons historiques qui expliquent pourquoi les politiques du multiculturalisme sont un sujet si sensible en France. Chercheurs et acteurs publics se réuniront à l'occasion de cinq conférences publiques, portant sur les thèmes les plus polémiques de ce débat : citoyenneté, République, religion, langue et politiques culturelles.

  War and experiences of European-ness: convergences, transfers and circulations (1900–1950)

  National societies do not function in closed space. The spread of new communication and transport means during the second half of the 19^th century has brought together formerly distant regions of the European continent and created new spaces for economic and information exchanges. This process of convergence provided a basis for a larger "community of Europeans". At the same time, a somewhat contradictory development took place through the strengthening of nationalist ideas and movements leading to the foundation of so-called "nation-states" in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and the intensification of tensions between different ethnic groups and minorities. European societies therefore experienced contradictory changes, both rapprochement on a transnational level and withdrawal to the national space.

  Au cours des trente dernières années, les études sur la globalisation se sont bien souvent majoritairement concentrées sur la conceptualisation du « global », sa définition, ses caractéristiques (politiques, économiques, culturelles, sociales…), ainsi que sur les enjeux épistémologiques que posait sa construction comme objet désormais fondamental des sciences sociales. Si la plus grande partie des travaux qui s’y intéressent partagent ce constat désormais banal que l’événement « globalisation » – quel que soit son nom et quelle que soit son ancienneté – ne peut absolument pas laisser intactes les disciplines qui font du social leur objet et oblige, en tant qu’il est un « devenir société du monde » ou un « devenir mondial de la société », à engager une réflexion fondamentale sur leurs buts et leurs méthodes, ces mêmes études divergent grandement sur la façon dont cette prise en compte doit s’appliquer sur le terrain.

  Although the word etiquette has today taken on an accepted meaning that might appear clear and well defined, it quickly becomes clear that this notion is far from self-evident. In addition to the fact that people often confuse “ceremonial”, “protocol” and “etiquette”, the latter term was only used rarely at the time, and often with very different meanings. Whether in Richelet’s dictionary or Furetière’s, the lexicographers took it in what was essentially a legal sense. This line of research aims to formalise the unwritten customs of the French court. In fact, in contrast to the many systematic studies carried out particularly on the Hapsburg court in Madrid and those on the court in Vienna, French etiquette has always been universally viewed according to the customs and rituals of the court. The main objective here is to understand the evolution of etiquette as it developed, improved and declined.

  World War I had a devastating impact upon German Missions (Roman Catholic and Protestant). A general description of German mission fields A.D. 1914 will be the starting point of the Conference. Case studies are welcome on particular territories such as Togo, Cameroon, East Africa, South-West Africa, South East Asia, Pacific area, China, India, Middle East. Attention will be paid to the predicament of local "orphaned" Christian churches and communities, and to the relationships between the local leadership with the new foreign missions authorized by the Allies instead of German personnel.
