European Space Agency's Space History Conference

There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

The Franciscans in Mexico

Five Centuries of Cultural Influence

Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire. The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

Exclusion and social discipline in the Medieval city in Europe

14th international meetings of the Middle Ages in Nájera

In the late Middle Ages, exclusion became a basic instrument for urban governance, as it enabled lay and ecclesiastical leaders to maintain their control over urban dwellers on the basis of maintaining a certain social discipline and an “ordered” society. Thus, medieval urban society was defined as a community of values according to the ecclesiastical and secular legislation, and it was articulated as a political discourse, which was incorporated into the public sphere. The urban community had to adapt to a legal and ideological framework and to some parameters of behavior, in which exclusion from the community was a powerful communication tool of social discipline. Historians and Graduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts for research presentations or posters on topics related to “exclusion and social discipline in the Medieval European City”.

Olhares sobre as Américas

Para seu numero 11, RITA se propõe de interrogar na sua seção Thema os vínculos entre poder e mídias nas Américas. Diferentes orientações podem ser evocadas, sem ser exclusivas. Artigos que tratarão da analise critica das mídias oficiais ou artigos sobre as mídias de oposição, em contextos históricos e geográficos variados, estão benvindos. Outras contribuições poderiam se interessar pelos efeitos das diferentes formas de tratamento mediático reservadas aos movimentos populares. Análises criticas sobre as relações entre mídias e poderes econômicos são também esperadas. O dossiê temático poderá também integrar reflexões sobre a recente diversificação das mídias de informação, tratando por exemplo do aparecimento de mídias “alternativas” na Internet ou do poder das fake news na construção das representações coletivas.

When anthropology meets geography

Discerning locally embedded, yet globally connected socio-territorial struggles

Identities are not only related to politics of assimilation and exclusion in the context of Nation-States, but also shape territorial configuration and arrangements in relation to geographical space. The latter becomes a territory for the accumulation of cultural symbols resulting from the different activities accomplished by a community living in that given space. In order to comprehend what drives various societies in resisting against the dispossession of land, in defending their resources and in opposing the political economies of States, new methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches are needed.

ICIQ3 - Third international conference on interpreting quality

ICIQ3, the third international conference on interpreting quality, will be held in the city of Granada, Spain, on 5, 6 and 7 October 2017. ICIQ3 is intended as a platform for fruitful dialogue on interpreting quality. It will bring together a variety of perspectives and promote exchange. The conference will address a number of topics, including, but not limited to the following: quality criteria in different interpreting settings, user expectations and needs, quality perception and quality measurement, quality assurance in the interpreting process, nonprofessional interpreting, method transfer across disciplines.

Languages of urbanization and visions of the city

This section will focus on the representations of urban spaces and urban lives in the Americas, with special regard to the languages and the social practices that convey – or that have conveyed in the past – the idea of “making the city”. We are especially interested both in grassroots movements of urban resistance and in counter-hegemonic representations of the urban space. We welcome contributions on practices of re-appropriation of the city, on the strategies of resistance to the processes of gentrification, on the relationship between urban space and subaltern groups (minorities and/or subcultures) and on the ways in which the urban space has been represented, reimagined or invented in literature, cinema, comics, music, photography, television, visual arts.

La celebración del congreso del 2017 se integra en un marco más amplio de trabajo, dedicado al estudio de aspectos como: la integración de la historia de España en el contexto europeo, la oposición a los totalitarismos, el fomento de la democracia, el cumplimiento de los derechos humanos, la construcción de la ciudadanía y la memoria como objeto de conocimiento. El Congreso nace de la relación y colaboración mutua entre Les Territoires de la Mémoire Liège y Territorios de la Memoria España, se enmarca en un espacio de trabajo dedicado al estudio de los totalitarismos, los derechos humanos, la democracia como valor fundamental, el concepto de ciudadanía, y la memoria como objeto de investigación, fundamentalmente en un ámbito europeo.

Entre os dias 23 e 25 de outubro de 2017, o Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) vai organizar o V Colóquio «A Nova Lisboa Medieval». A evocação comemorativa das conquistas de Lisboa, em 1147 e de Alcácer do Sal em 1217, é o pretexto para um debate mais amplo em torno, não apenas destes acontecimentos e do seu significado e impacto, mas de todo o contexto mais vasto que os envolve e explica, na diversidade dos caminhos que se desenharam e redesenharam, tanto no espaço peninsular como no quadro mais amplo que ligava o Ocidente e o Oriente.

The 5th international congress “Sport, doping and society” is organized by the Spanish Agency for Health Protection in Sport (AEPSAD) and the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). Under the theme “Think Clean”, there will be presented the results of scientific researches and new methodologies in the field of doping in sport from the specific perspective of Human and Social Sciences. We believe that this initiative will contribute to identify the factors that influence the use of doping substances and methods. The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance

Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

We invite to this seminar Biocultural Dimensions of the Everyday life researchers interested in the study of the body, of the human embodiment, of the techniques of the body, of the linkages between bodily action and material culture, of the human/animal co-actions, of the nutrition, of the health, of the bodily education, of the dance, of the sexuality and of other fragments of everyday life that invite to think about the complexity of the human being-in-the-world.

Mythe et émotions

Il existe une logique rationnelle mais aussi une logique émotionnelle, responsable de nombreuses actions que nous réalisons. La mythocritique aborde souvent les récits mythiques depuis une perspective structurelle, sociale, historique, etc. Cependant, elle ignore souvent le composant émotionnel. Il semblerait que la dimension affective, particulièrement présente dans notre société contemporaine, ne soit pas pertinente dans les études de mythologie. Le Congrès examinera le rôle que jouent les émotions aussi bien dans la structuration des récits mythiques que dans les procès de mythification de personnages et événements historiques. Le cadre de travail est l’étude des mythes anciens, médiévaux et modernes dans la littérature et les arts contemporains (depuis 1900).

III International Conference in Narratives

The third International Conference in Narratives, organized by Universidad EAFIT (Medellín, Colombia) and Università degli Studi di Padova, proposes rewriting as an object of reflection from the arts, humanities, social sciences and communication sciences. To interrogate the gesture of writing a text again, it involves accounting for an operation that, in its apparent simplicity, shows the experience of time and repetition, the recording of memory, the tension between imitation and difference, and the means of reproduction and creation. Along its relationships, objects and notions that it implies, the gesture of rewriting is exemplary and heuristic; it has become a model for understanding various phenomena and cultural practices.
