L’objectif de ces 1^er journées d’étude sur « Littérature et culture de la transition espagnole : la transition vue des marges » est donc d’aborder l’histoire littéraire et culturelle à partir du travail mené par ces mouvements contestataires ou ex-centriques, en soulignant ces manifestations dissidentes comme reflet ou représentation de cette période ; comme une entrée nécessaire pour comprendre les mutations, réajustements, capitulations, innovations qui ont peu à peu composé le tissu littéraire et culturel de ces années-là, et qui expliqueraient les chemins suivis au cours des décennies suivantes.

IX Conference of Spanish, Belgian and Dutch historians. In honour of Professor Hugo de Schepper

This conference intends to continue the tradition of the Hispanic-Dutch-Belgian meetings and will bring together a number of established and early-career researchers working in the field of the institutional history of the Habsburg Low Countries from the 16^th to the 18^th centuries. It aims to draw attention to a broad range of political, cultural, religious, legal, and military institutions by focusing on the enriching approaches that have shaped historical research on institutional history in the past few decades. At the same time, it hopes to bring into the limelight some exciting new (and often interdisciplinary) perspectives that characterize current research in the field.

Militantism and Re-Compositions in Latin America

Re-composition of Militantism, Militant Trajectories and Constructions of Political Elites

This dossier aims to reflect equally on two issues central to the political reconfiguration of formerly militant activism in the most recent period of Latin American history. The first concerns the phenomena of political transformation of former militants and the networks and routes used by former militant actors to politically transform themselves. Many of these have been structured around the strategic positioning of radical political commitments, in addition to the development and integration of new generations of activists into partisan life. The notion of re-composition (translated from the French reconversion) seems appropriate in order to elaborate specifically the political landscape of formal and state connections in different cultural contexts of militantism. The second issue concerns the reconfiguration of militancy in societies that have undergone neoliberal reforms imposed in the last decades of the past century and the development of new approaches to the resistance to the neoliberal state.

IV International Conference of Myth Criticism

Myth and Emotions

Along with rational logic there is an emotional logic, responsible for many actions that we carry out. Myth Criticism tends to tackle mythical stories from a structural, social and historical perspective. However, it often ignores the emotional component. It seems as if the affective dimension, particularly active in our contemporary society, is not considered relevant in the studies of mythology. The Conference will examine the function undertaken by emotions in the structure of mythical stories and in the processes of mythification of characters and historical events. The object of the study will focus on ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary literature and art (since 1900).

Modernisation and the challenge of practice: alternative political spaces (Europe, Americas, 18th-19th centuries)

Les espaces alternatifs du politique (Europe, Amérique, XVIIIe- XIXe siècle)

En partant d’études de cas empruntées aux espaces européen et américain, ces journées se proposent d’étudier les interactions conflictuelles entre des acteurs ou des groupes d’acteurs et les autorités ou l’État, afin de réexaminer le paradigme de la modernisation des sociétés européenne et américaine aux XVIII^e et XIX^e siècle. De ce fait, le choix d’une périodisation au-delà de la décennie révolutionnaire ne vise pas à reprendre le discours d’une politisation qui commencerait avec la Révolution française avant de se diffuser tout au long du XIX^e siècle, mais bien plutôt à s’intéresser aux permanences d’une appropriation du politique par les acteurs dès l’époque moderne, et la possibilité de la construction d’espaces politiques qui ne sont pas ceux qui sont privilégiés dans les analyses classiques de la politisation.

New ports, pioneer ports (XIVth-XXIth centuries)

The Conference will address four topics: the creation of a port, the major enlargement of an existing port, the rapid transformation of a small port into a big harbour, or the temporary establishment of a port for economic or military reasons. The analysis includes commercial harbours and naval bases, as well as mixed ports. The concept of an “Atlantic port” refers to its location on the Atlantic Ocean or its extensions in the Channel, the North Sea and the Caribbean Sea. This includes the ports of the European, the African and American Atlantic littoral, as well as the metropolitan European and the African and American ports both as colonial ports and after their independence.

Par delà les pratiques d'écriture propres aux auteurs mystiques et ascétiques, les contribution d'études replaceront la médiatisation du texte ascétique dans son rapport à la norme juridique et canonique.

Previous Aliento Conferences examined medieval sapiential corpora in the Iberian Peninsula, the ancient sources of the medieval corpora, the links between proverbs and sapiential literature in the Middle Ages, and addressed the questions of translation and context. The 6^thconference will address the posterity of sapiential texts (of the wider Aliento corpus, in Arabic, Hebrew, Latin, Castilian and Catalan) starting from the Iberian Peninsula and their influence in Europe and the Mediterranean.

Spanish syndicalism within the framework of international relations

The case of the General Workers Unions (1888-1986)

The emergence of a labour movement, of socialist obedience, more specifically, in Spain, goes hand in hand with internationalism. From its creation, in 1888, the General Union of Workers (UGT) has tried to incorporate the international labour movement. Thus, through time, UGT joined the main organizations such as the International Federation of Trade Unions, the World Federation of Trade Unions, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the European Trade Union Confederation. The UGT also takes part in the work by the International Labour Organization and fosters relations with other foreign organisations. Finally, the UTG is involved with international solidarity groups and organisations dealing with social security like the Democratic Solidary organisation in Spain. To this day, few studies have been conducted on the importance of those links on the growth of the UGT, notably at some crucial moments of its existence such as the Francoist dictatorship and the transition towards democracy. These relations played a decisive part in the survival of socialist trade unions.

The production of oil and amphora in the Guadalquivir basin in the Roman period

Entre 2013 et 2015, un programme de recherches du LabEx Archimède a été consacré à l’économie rurale de la vallée du Genil à l’époque romaine à travers l’étude des ateliers d’amphores à huile. Des prospections pédestres ont concerné une trentaine d’ateliers pour lesquels on dispose désormais d’une riche documentation, issue d’un protocole d’étude homogène. Plus de 800 timbres ont été collectés et complètent les études antérieures dont la dernière en date est celle de P. Berni en 2008. Une production insoupçonnée et importante de Dr. 23 a également été mise en évidence qui montre la vitalité économique de cette zone à la fin de l’Antiquité.

De tout temps l’innovation tant technique que sociale, a fait partie de l’histoire de la maîtrise et de la gestion de l’eau : procédés d’irrigation développés par les grandes sociétés de la Mésopotamie Antique et de l’Espagne musulmane, organisation sociale du partage de l’eau dans les sociétés indiennes ou latino-américaines, transferts interbassins ou barrages, etc. Mais dans un contexte plus récent de dégradation quantitative et qualitative de cette ressource, de changements climatiques, de croissance urbaine accélérée des grandes métropoles, d’une agriculture irriguée largement sollicitée, d’un cadre institutionnel en évolution, l’innovation est de nouveau interrogée pour répondre aux besoins en eau.

With the contribution of specialists in several branches of humanities, our purpose is to bring to light some neglected or partially studied aspects of this great classical thinker and exemplary figure of scientific eclecticism, who played a great part in the universalization of knowledge. We will pay special attention to the way in which Boethius’ scientific and cultural legacy was included in the works of other European authors, and was renewed according to the feelings, anxieties and aspirations particular to every age and historical context.

Migrations and exiles

One of the 20th century's main features was the large movements of people abandoning their places of origin for economic, political and social reasons. Migration-fostering conditions, like the search for sufficient means of subsistence, escaping from armed conflict and political and religious persecution, are intensified by economic crises and the advent of authoritarian Governments. In the host countries, emigrants, exiles and refugees form associations, publish periodicals, hold commemorations and foster socialisation tools, which make them a group with a national identity and/or a specific political positioning. Concomitantly, they undergo acculturation, as a result of their inevitable adjustment to the new reality, translated into the activities they perform and the structure of the relations they keep with the host country.
