Quatrième Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies

The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies – a collaboration between the Bauhaus- Universität Weimar (Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie, IKKM) and Princeton University (German Department) – returns to Princeton in 2014 for its fourth installment. The 2014 topic will be “Practices, Procedures, Recursions: The Reality of Media?”. The weeklong program will be hosted by Princeton’s German Department. It will be directed by Bernhard Siegert (Weimar) and Nikolaus Wegmann (Princeton). Besides the directors the faculty will include renowned film maker Harun Farocki as well as scholars of media and literature such as Petra McGillen (Dartmouth), Grant Wythoff (Columbia), and Harun Maye (Weimar).

Colonial geopolitics and local cultures in the Hellenistic and Roman East (IIIrd Century B.C. – IIIrd Century A.D.)

It seems clear that, in the Greek-speaking regions of the Roman Empire, Hellenistic models (civic, military or institutional) exercised considerable influence over “Italic” colonial projects. Within this field, relations between military colonists and indigenous peoples demand special attention, considering the degree of social, cultural, economic, political and geopolitical transformation brought about by the installation of certain groups upon those lands as a result of the will of the great power(s) that ruled over them. As for the Roman colonization, modern scholars have often described Roman colonies as vectors of Romanization inserted in alien lands, writing that these communities must have functioned as images of a “small Rome.” While the existence of Latin-speaking colonists ruled by a favorable juridical system such as the Ius Italicum cannot be denied, such a reductionist model can no longer be accepted without qualification, especially in the context of the Greek-speaking provinces of the Roman East. The regions of the Eastern Mediterranean world saw the coming of a number of groups of Roman colonists and thus their cultural climate, their agrarian structures and their geopolitical environment changed. The aim of this panel is to explore new research paths based on broader studies in time and space.

Concilier expertise scientifique et participation : le défi posé par la Convention européenne des paysages

L'Institut de gestion de l'environnement et d'aménagement du territoire – ULB (avec l'appui du département d'histoire-UNamur et de la Conférence permanente du développement territorial) organise les 28 et 29 avril 2014 un colloque portant sur « Concilier expertise scientifique et participation : le défi posé par la Convention européenne des paysages ». Le colloque servira également à étudier la manière dont les outils de caractérisation des paysages sont construits et dans quelle mesure ils aident les acteurs du paysage (décideurs politiques, gestionnaires,…) à prendre une position en accord avec les besoins sociétaux (économiques, sociaux, environnementaux). En plus des présentations et posters retenus, d’éminents intervenants enrichiront le colloque avec leurs perspectives/expériences spécifiques.

When cities meet forests

Environmental approaches of interactions between cities and forest supplies during the Middles Ages and the Early modern period. 12th International Conference on urban History, European Association for Urban History – Main Session M16

As places of consumption and production European medieval and early modern cities exerted a enormous pressure on neighbouring woodlands. Some historical studies have already discussed the way cities tried to impone their control on these lands emphasizing the diversity of needs which were fulfilled by forest exploitation (wood, timber, charcoal, grazing…). They often concluded that urban pressure resulted in an inexorable degradation of the forest cover. Indeed local woodlands and forests products could probably never meet the demand. In order to face shortage or, better, to prevent it, urban authorities attempted on one hand to extend their control on more and more distant forests and to attract interregional or « international » trade flows. On the other hand, they tried to regulate the local market so as to ensure access to several important needs regarding urban economy (charcoal, timber).

Adaptation au changement global : effet des modes de gouvernance sur la biodiversité et les paysages

The aim of this conference is to contribute to the general ideas evolution on governance enabling to adapt to global change through biodiversity and cultural landscapes preservation. Many countries have established various institutions to facilitate their sustainable development, such as expert groups, advisory consultants, assessment procedures, evaluation clauses, incentive and regulation policies. Until very recently, policies aimed at mitigating biodiversity erosion, and maintain landscape quality. But more and more people wonder how to design policies going forward simple conservation logics towards more active policies where biodiversity elements contribute to sustainable development. Policies aiming at progressively developing biodiversity (and not only mitigating its erosion), at integrating landscapes to a global management of local development, do need design patterns that integrate human activities and involve the different actors.

Fenómenos de regressão (estrutural e disposicional), de articulação de ritmos assincrónicos de mudança social, de proliferação do risco e da incerteza, conciliação conflitual de modernidades múltiplas numa modernidade inacabada, desafiam-nos a olhar sociologicamente estes últimos 40 anos e também a refletir prospectivamente sobre as tendências e desafios do futuro próximo. É com muito prazer que a Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia (APS) convida sociólogos e outros especialistas nacionais e estrangeiros a submeterem propostas de comunicação até dia 6 de outubro de 2013.

On the Dynamics of Production (Distration/Interference - Resistance/Accident) ». Dans une perspective transpériodique (de l'Antiquité à nos jours), le but de ces rencontres est de questionner la dynamique de la production dans l'acte créateur à travers l'émergence d'éléments inattendus (interférences, distractions, détours...) venant troubler, modifier, arrêter, détourner etc, la production d'une oeuvre (artistique, littéraire, etc.) et révélant de façon sous-jacente ou directe la présence de l'artiste (au sen large) dans sa création.

The Institute for Transcultural and Transtextual Studies (IETT) is organising a multi-disciplinary conference on old age, interpreted as a transitional period during which individuals have to face specific issues. The conference aims to explore three major themes. The first one will lead us to address a series of questions related to aesthetic norms and social models. The second theme will focus on forms of mental and physical degeneration and will encourage us to examine the consequences of age-related disability, segregation, and exclusion. The third issue is based on the related questions of memory and transmission. It will allow us to reflect upon the transmission of traditions and on relationships within the family, partly based on authority, and/or on inherited collective values.

À l’occasion du cinquantenaire des indépendances africaines, les pays d’Afrique de l’Est et leurs diasporas, la communauté scientifique internationale ou encore les anciennes puissances coloniales dressent le bilan des réussites et des échecs économiques, sociaux et politiques. On constate cependant que ces inventaires, centrés sur les bouleversements des structures sociales, économiques et politiques, parfois sur les mémoires des pères de la nation et des grands récits nationalistes, négligent généralement de revenir sur des acteurs politiques, collectifs ou individuels, marginalisés dans les années qui ont suivi l’indépendance par les hommes qui ont incarné le nouveau pouvoir.

Quelles lectures des sources à l’ère numérique ?

After the inaugural DHLU Symposium in 2009 that focused on "Contemporary history in the digital age" and a second edition which tackled the methodological and theoretical implications of considering websites as primary sources (March 2012), this third edition will focus on the use of online thematic research corpora. Given that more and more sources for contemporary history are being made available online as digital research corpora — as on the CVCE’s site — and following on from the first two editions which examined the methods used to develop these sources, this third edition of Digital Humanities Luxembourg will focus on the various ways in which this material is used by humanities researchers, particularly contemporary historians and more specifically specialists in European integration.

Histoire, archéologie et archéométrie des productions en laiton, bronze et autres alliages à base de cuivre dans l’Europe médiévale (XIIe-XVIe siècle)

L’objectif de ce colloque organisé dans une ville dont une bonne part de l’activité était tournée vers la métallurgie du cuivre et du laiton au Moyen Âge, est de faire l’état des connaissances à la fois sur les productions, les techniques, les ateliers et les hommes qui y travaillaient, mais aussi sur le marché et la diffusion de ces productions. Le colloque présentera des travaux en histoire et en archéologie, associant ou non des études archéométriques des matériaux et des procédés.

O Mediterrâneo e o Sul Ibérico na Época Medieval: Cultura, Identidade e Património (Sécs V-XV)

O congresso internacional “O Mediterrâneo e o Sul Ibérico na época medieval: Cultura, Identidade e Património. Sécs V - XV” terá lugar na cidade de Évora, nos dias 5 e 6 de Dezembro de 2013, assinalando os 1100 anos sobre o saque da urbe alentejana pelo futuro rei Ordonho II, ocorrido no ano de 913. O encontro terá como principal objectivo reunir jovens investigadores e especialistas, nacionais e estrangeiros, de áreas tão diversas como a Arqueologia, a História, a História da Arte, a Literatura, a Antropologia, entre outras, que se dediquem ao estudo de temáticas relacionadas com o Sul ibérico na época medieval. Pretende-se, portanto, numa perspectiva multidisciplinar, analisar as relações de proximidade e afinidades que, em contexto medieval, existiram entre as regiões mais meridionais da Península Ibérica e o espaço mediterrânico, mas também quaisquer temáticas relacionadas com outros aspectos específicos da Arte, da História económica, política e social, ou da Cutura e das Mentalidades do Sul ibérico, sempre e quando as mesmas se integrem no âmbito cronológico em causa.
