Locating negative affects in post-reform China

This panel takes the prevalence of positivity in post-reform China as an invitation to investigate its opposites: the variety of negative ordinary affects that can be viewed as ensuing from state-induced “situations of restricted agency”. What can we learn from the various forms of negativity that morph out of the socio-political circumstances of post-reform China, and how to tread a fine line between the risk of romanticization and analytical dismissal? Under what conditions do the expression and performance of negative affects constitute “a manifestation of autonomy from state directives” in the context of pervasive “happiness” campaigns? Or is their work ambivalent, if not problematic, especially when they come to be associated with specific marginalized groups?

Les sources des relations « internationales » entre les centres politiques de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (800–1600)

Le XV^e colloque international de diplomatique organisé par la Commission internationale de diplomatique aura lieu du 4 au 6 octobre 2018 à Leipzig. Le colloque étudiera les caractéristiques diplomatiques des chartes médiévales et modernes et d’autres documents utilisés dans la diplomatie « internationale » et interreligieuse. L’objectif principal du colloque sera d’analyser le répertoire « international » et interreligieux des types et des formes de documents ainsi que leurs spécificités régionales. Une attention particulière sera accordée aux différentes étapes de la tradition et à leurs conséquences pour l'interprétation historique, en se concentrant sur les caractéristiques internes et externes de la documentation diplomatique.

Second World Urbanity: Between Capitalist and Communist Utopias

Second World Urbanity: Between Capitalist and Communist Utopias seeks to investigate the history of the radical reshaping of the Soviet World (in our words - the Second World), that Ada Louise Huxtable reported on in the late 1960s. This project aims to bring together scholarly contributions on the various endeavors in the Second World to conceive, build, and inhabit a socialist cityscape that was an alternative to the segregated spaces of capitalist cities and the atomized world of suburbia. Imagining and designing urban space were undeniably powerful instruments of forging socialist modernity. Second World Urbanity pays close attention to the tensions between global challenges and locally driven agendas that made architects, planners, and ordinary dwellers alter socialist modernity according to more particular interests.

Die Tagung setzt sich mit kulturhistorischen Dimensionen des Sammelns auseinander. Das Anlegen von Sammlungen, etwa von Büchern, Handschriften, Alltagsgegenständen oder Kunstwerken, ist ein zentraler Bestandteil kulturellen Schaffens und eine materielle Voraussetzung für das kulturelle Gedächtnis. Im 19. Jahrhundert erhält diese Tätigkeit neue Aus-prägungen, durch die sie sich von den vorangehenden kirchlichen oder höfischen Sammlungen entfernt.

Révolution des médias, évolution des études de lettres ?

Atelier lors du colloque de l'association des francoromanistes allemands

Le quotidien académique est modifié par la révolution des médias à plus d’un titre. D’une part, ces technologies facilitent le travail, le rendant plus rapide, plus confortable et plus durable. D’autre part, ils le modifient jusqu’à la méthodologie, ouvrant de nouveaux horizons et traçant de nouvelles limites. Ceci est le cas surtout quand les médias et outils numériques transforment le traitement scientifique des objets de recherche. Dans ce contexte, il importe de prendre conscience des chances et des risques des mutations actuelles, d’observer de manière critique la direction qu’elles prennent et de les adapter aux besoins et aux intérêts de la discipline, c’est-à-dire de les influencer de manière productive. L’objectif consiste à prendre conscience des efforts actuels et d’encourager la mise en oeuvre de nouveaux projets.
