Heraldry in Medieval and Early Modern State-Rooms
Towards a Typology of Heraldic Programmes in Spaces of Self-Representation
Heraldry was an ubiquitous element of state-rooms. Whether in palaces of kings and princes, castles of noblemen, residences of patricians, city halls or in cathedral chapters, heraldic display was a crucial element in the visual programme of these spaces. Despite its omnipresence, however, heraldic display in state-rooms remains largely understudied so far. This workshop aims to explore these heraldic programmes in state-rooms in medieval and early modern Europe and to suggest an initial typology of this phenomenon.

Human procreation and family planning and the challenge of the evolution in values in the 20th century

Identity and the challenge of interdisciplinarity

Conflict Groups and Disputatio
Intra- and Extra-Academic Lines of Conflict around the Parisian University, c. 1300

Evacuations in Franco-German border spaces during the Second World War

Scholarship, prize and job offer - History
Since rulers of the Imperial Roman Period and the Early Middle Ages occupied the highest (secular) position, individuals who exerted influence on them enjoyed a great extent of power. As a consequence, there was bitter rivalry between the various agents and much thinking about legitimate and illegitimate influence. These exercises and concepts of personal influence are the topic of a new Emmy-Noether junior research group, which is offering two PhD positions.

Security Provision in West Asia and North Africa in times of Social and Political Change
Amongst the various demands of the thousands of people who took to the streets in West Asia and North Africa since late 2010, one common theme has been an end of arbitrary police violence and corruption. Throughout the uprisings and in an attempt to contain the growing insecurity, people started policing in the absence of police. Prominent examples are the liğān šaᶜbiya, the popular committees, in Egypt and in a different shape and outreach in Syria or in Yemen. Yet even before the uprisings, non-state actors have policed territory in spaces of limited statehood, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, or the People’s Protection Units in Syrian Kurdistan. This workshop aims at conceptualizing the ambivalent relationships in comparative perspective, addressing the different ways in which boundaries and relations between military, police and civilian worlds are reshaped today.
