The digital humanities have been largely debated and are currently a wellestablished branch of knowledge with specific departments, research centres, journals and a growing community gathered around several national and international associations. The digital humanities have a growing impact on teaching, researching and on dissemination in the humanities, and are nowadays an almost mandatory approach for new research projects and for young researchers curriculum. This summer school aims at providing concrete answers to specific needs and challenges emerging from projects carried out by master and PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Perception, réaction et enregistrement de phénomènes naturels avant l’Illuminisme

Le numéro 18 de la RHSC se propose de publier un cahier thématique composé d’articles qui s’occupera de l’analyse de la perception, de l’interprétation et de l’enregistrement des phénomènes naturels pendant les périodes antérieures à la consolidation de la mentalité scientifique moderne. Il s’agit de comprendre comment les différents phénomènes – climatiques, astronomiques, sismologiques, volcanologiques, etc. – étaient vécus, expliqués et évalués avant le développement des technologies capables de les prévoir, de les surveiller et de les déchiffrer. Une attention particulière devra être donnée aux documents, aux rapports, aux représentations et aux traces qui nous renseignent sur des éclipses, des comètes, des tempêtes et naufrages, des éruptions volcaniques, des inondations de fleuves, des tornades, des sècheresses, et autres phénomènes qui ont marqué, directement ou indirectement, les populations et qui ont intégré leur mémoire collective.

Revue scientifique « Laboreal »

Reprendre un emploi après un accident du travail constitue un objet de recherche et d'intervention dont les analyses méritent une diffusion plus large. C'est la finalité de ce dossier préparé pour la revue Laboreal (laboreal.up.pt) par une équipe de chercheurs, psychologues et sociologues du travail portugais. Ce dossier doit en outre permettre d'identifier de nouvelles formes d'intervention dans et en dehors des entreprises, à différents niveaux, et en prenant en compte les questions touchant à l'amélioration des conditions de travail ainsi qu'à toutes les formes de soutien (individuel, collectif et institutionnel) qui permettraient à la victime d'un accident du travail de retrouver une vie active décente.

Singing the Past

Music and the Politics of Memory

This international conference intends to investigate how songs can constitute means to narrate historical events as well as social and political figures. This symposium intends to explore “unofficial” narratives that are clearly distinct from or opposing to political authority. This will allow us to investigate various relations to the past and how those may be performed, often through personal narratives constructing alternative histories. Another central issue is the content of the songs. In other words, what in the songs’ material conveys historical and political meaning? Nevertheless, it should not be studied apart from the music which conveys its social meaning. The choice of musical instruments, forms and aesthetics as well as musical borrowings or quotations highlights symbols that are superposed to and intertwined with textual content in a complex semiotic structure that needs to be unpacked.

The Great War and the Azores: from naval strategy to trench warfare

This meeting aims to analyze the relationship of the Atlantic, with particular emphasis on the Azores, the complex logistical support to the belligerents, regardless of the stage of war being European or colonial, and the multiple dynamics involved, whether political, economic, ideological or geographical. Likewise, it seeks to value and dignify not only the memory of those who act as, but the material and immaterial heritage, in the year in which the bombing of the main Azorean city and the creation of a foreign naval base in its territory is evoked.

Les chemins de l'Occident et de l'Orient

Entre les 23 et 25 octobre 2017, l’Institut d'études médiévales (IEM) organisera la V^e conférence « La nouvelle Lisbonne médiévale ». L’évocation commémorative des conquêtes de Lisbonne, en 1147 et d’Alcacer do Sal en 1217, est le prétexte pour un débat plus ample autour de ces questions : pas seulement de ces événements et de leurs significations et impacts, mais aussi de tout le contexte plus vaste qui les entoure et qui les explique, dans la diversité des chemins qui se sont dessinés et redessinés, aussi bien dans l’espace péninsulaire, que dans le cadre plus global qui liait l’Occident et l’Orient.

The main aim is to promote a broad and innovative debate on the concept of “pantheon” throughout the Middle Ages, as well as their underlying intentions. It is also intended to address the specificity of themes that are intertwined with the construction, ornamentation and everyday uses of these spaces by the communities that host them.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)

Spaces, images, rituals

From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.
