Call for papers - Epistemology and methodology
From quarries to rock-cut sites. Echoes of stone crafting
The conference aims at carrying on the international debate on the archaeological investigation of rock-cut spaces and stone quarries, considered as aspects of the same mining phenomenon: places in which specific empirical and handcrafted knowledge related to stone working is expressed and conveyed. The conference envisages a diachronic approach and therefore all case studies are welcome, without chronological limits.

Problems, methodologies and historical sources from the Antiquity to the present day
The PhD students in History at the University of Pisa (Italy) are pleased to announce a call for papers for a three-days online seminar (December 10-11-12, 2020) concerning the multifaceted concept of identity and its many dimensions. The seminar aims to grasp the complexity and intersection of different affiliations and identity constructions throughout history. In this sense, we will share new methodological and epistemological approaches, with a diachronic, global and interdisciplinary perspective.

Pisa: from the great plague to the Florentine conquest (1348-1406)
New directions for the history of a society in crisis
Pise est sans doute l’un des observatoires privilégiés de la « crise du XIVe siècle ». La grande mortalité s’abat en effet sur une ville qui, déjà, connaît les affres des bouleversements économiques et politiques. L'historiographie a longtemps interprété l'histoire de la ville au Trecento, et a fortiori entre la Peste Noire et la conquête florentine (1406) selon un paradigme décliniste. Pourtant, à la suite des travaux menés sur cette période par F. Melis et M. Tangheroni et des renouvellements plus récents, profitant d’un regain d’intérêt pour l’exploitation des sources de la pratique, il est possible de réévaluer l'ampleur de la « crise » pisane, et de redéfinir les paramètres politiques, économiques et sociétaux qui ont marqué la période postérieure à la Grande peste.

Ce colloque international, organisé par le Département de sciences humaines de l’université d’Udine, par le GERCI (Groupe d’études et de recherches sur la culture italienne) de l’université Stendhal et par l’École normale supérieure de Pise, a pour ambition de tenter un bilan de la figure de Jolles et de son œuvre, en s’interrogeant aussi sur les possibilités d’application de ses catégories formelles à des disciplines différentes.

The Wisdom of the Ancients. Jerusalem rediscovers Athens
The German-Jewish Revaluation of Ancient Philosophy
Between 1920 and 1930, a group of young, brilliant Jewish researchers studied in Germany under the direction of Cassirer, Husserl and Heidegger. Leo Strauss, Karl Löwith, Hans Jonas, Hannah Arendt, Jacob Klein, Eric Weil, Günther Anders, and others were forced by the advent of Nazism to escape from Germany and to wander around the world. All these thinkers strove to question the historicist assumption, according to which Modernity is to be seen as progress in respect to the Ancient thought. In their studies, they found new ways to listen to the voice of the Ancients, by revaluating them in the context of the crisis of modern thought. Starting from Athens and Jerusalem, the symbolic roots of western culture, these philosophers problematized and revitalized the quarrel between Ancients and Moderns over again.

ANR ENPrESA round table
Après les deux réunions à Paris (décembre 2012, juin 2013) et une première journée de présentation des membres de l’ANR à Pise (mars 2013), la table ronde de décembre 2013 sera l’occasion, après un an de travaux, de réunir les membres de l’ANR pour deux journées de travail au cœur des archives salviati à la Scuola Normale Superiore, lieu de dépôt par la famille de leurs archives. Elle sera consacrée aux résultats des travaux individuels et collectifs entamés ainsi qu’aux perspectives de recherche, elle fera alterner des présentations individuelles et des ateliers de travail avec la présence d’experts extérieurs. La table ronde permettra de réfléchir aux suites et à la forme à donner aux enquêtes.

ISO WG1 Meeting on Exchange Protocols for Language Processing Web Services
The next meeting of the ISO WG1 project on Exchange Protocols for language processing web services will be held in Pisa, Italy, for the full day on Thursday, September 26, 2013. The meeting will be devoted to considering proposals for protocols for basic services, including data source delivery, tokenization, and part of speech tagging. Based on these prototypes, we will identify the general framework for specifying the exchange protocols, including principles for their design and the exchange syntax.
