Curiosity, Intellectual Enterprises and Scientific Explorations in the Writings of Women in the Early Modern Period (16th-18th centuries)

The subject of this international conference is the participation of women in the development of scientific ideas from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. It welcomes reflections on women’s intellectual contributions to the creation of the « Republic of Letters », and how female curiosity was connected to the development of a new rationality that opened new paths towards modern science, while simultaneously being stimulated by the marvellous and the strange, as was manifest in the creation of scientific cabinets and collections of rare objects. It aims at encouraging reflections on the concept of female scientific curiosity. This will allow us to discuss the construction of a female subjectivity emerged from new approaches towards collections of naturalia.

The “Arts of Thinking” Mathematics: introduction and case studies in Ethnomathematics, 2020-21

What do we have to gain epistemologically by broadening our point of view on mathematics by including all activities of an “arithmetic”, “geometric” or even “algorithmic” nature (braiding, divination, navigation, games, music, etc.), practiced in the past and / or nowadays in various societies? First, the seminar will address this central question of ethnomathematics by introducing the work carried out over the past few decades in this young interdisciplinary field. Secondly, we will present current research aimed at studying different mathematical practices involved in procedural / technical (textile production, string games, paper folding), musical, and counting activities.

Images of the world, images in power: annotating and drawing equestrian ballet, from carrousel to horseback contredanse (17th-18th century))

À partir d’un corpus de livres de fête conservés dans les collections Jacques Doucet de la bibliothèque de l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (mais qui ne doit pas s’y limiter), ces journées d’études chercheront à saisir les enjeux de la notation du ballet équestre dans les premières décennies du XVII^e siècle et ses prolongements jusqu’à la fin du siècle suivant, dans une relation à l’histoire de la danse, mais aussi à l’histoire des sciences et à l’histoire politique. Articulant représentations figurées des cavaliers et des motifs dessinés par leurs déplacements, et représentations abstraites (lignes, points, schémas) déployés sur la page, ces planches présentent un réel intérêt pour la recherche sur les formes notationnelles de la danse.

The spectre of mental health therapies: between the new order and a crisis in therapeutic paradigms

Depuis les années 1990, les évolutions des thérapies dédiées au traitement des maladies mentales, plus largement de la nébuleuse des troubles « psys », indiquent le dépassement de la partition, construite au sein de la psychiatrie moderne, entre médicaments et psychothérapies classiques. En témoigne la manière dont se définissent les TCC de « troisième génération », les techniques de remédiation cognitive ou encore les dispositifs d’e-santé mentale, qui mêlent une variété de gestes, de supports et d’intentions thérapeutiques. Ces journées d’études visent à interroger le nouvel ordre des thérapies en train de se faire, dans un contexte caractérisé par une crise des paradigmes thérapeutiques et par l’éclectisme des pratiques de soin. Quels sont les fondements, les traductions pratiques, les enjeux idéologiques et professionnels de ce nouveau champ des « thérapies en santé mentale » ? En quoi ce dernier réinterroge-t-il le bornage des interventions de « soin psychique » et la distinction de leurs spécificités sur le plan de la théorie clinique et sur celui des méthodes ?

Spa towns and politics (17th-19th century) - 2021

Ce séminaire vise à interroger les enjeux politiques autours des eaux minérales et des villes thermales de l’époque moderne. La médecine des eaux s’organise différemment selon les pays d’Europe : en France, elle se développe autour d’institutions multiples (hôpitaux, sanatoriums, fermes d’exploitations thermales). L’État cherche à assurer le contrôle de celui de l’eau elle-même et institutionnalise le thermalisme en développant un savoir d’état sur ces pratiques, qui s’accompagne de politiques de santé publique pour en faciliter l’accès. En Angleterre, l’assistance est agencée par des souscriptions, les sociétés de bienfaisance et des hôpitaux privés (Borsay, 1999). Par ailleurs, cette médecine s’exporte dans les colonies : les colons créent des stations thermales dans les colonies, et reviennent soigner leurs maladies coloniales aux eaux nationales (Jennings, 2009). La question de la propriété de l’eau, un bien commun (commons), est centrale dans tous ces développements institutionnels et entrepreneuriaux : à qui appartient l’eau ? La ville, l’état, les usages, les exploitants ?

HoST – Journal of History of Science and Technology - thematic dossiers (2022)

HoST - Journal of History of Science and Technology is an open access, on-line peer-reviewed international journal devoted to the History of Science and Technology, published in English by a group of Portuguese research institutions and De Gruyter/Sciendo. HoST encourages submissions of original historical research exploring the cultural, social and political dimensions of science, technology, and medicine (STM), both from a local and a global perspective. Past thematic issues have dealt with topics as diverse as circulation, science communication or the relation between science and politics. Future issues might deal with both established and emerging areas of scholarship. The editors of HoST are looking for proposals for two thematic dossiers to be published in 2022 (HoST volume 16, issues 1 and 2).

The Middle Ages of the Social Sciences

The present issue of the Revue d’histoire des sciences humaines intends to gather inquiries into specific uses of the Middle Ages in twentieth century social sciences. The reference to the Middle Ages may result from a scholarly acquaintance with the medieval world, as well as from tools forged by medieval studies. Alternatively, it may be correlated with intricate cultural mediations, for example through religion or literature. We would like to invite the practitioners of the various disciplines of the SSH (psychoanalysis, sociology, historical anthropology, history, the history of science and knowledge, art history, and philosophy, among others) to contribute to this issue either with a case study, or with a broader methodological or epistemological reflection on their scientific and knowledge practices envisioned from an historical point of view.

The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Comme toute technologie émergente, la blockchain mobilise un imaginaire fiévreux, souvent nourri de références religieuses ou théologiques. Quel est leur statut ? Quelle influence exercent-elles sur la réception ou le développement de ces technologies ?
