Queering Friendship | citizenship, care and choice

    Intimate Final Conference

Contrary to individualization theories that suggest the impoverishment of human relationships, theories of relationality recognize the increasing centrality of informal networks of solidarity and care. In this debate, friendship plays a fundamental role. The mutual implications of intimacy and citizenship need to be addressed, exploring the extent to which issues of LGBTQ friendship matter (or not) in being recognized as citizens. The centrality of friendship is even more striking when considering personal lives of trans and non-binary people, but also lesbian women, gay men and bisexual people, LGBTQ migrants and other intersecting, vulnerable groups. In particular, the way transgender people actively provide and receive different care between friends offers invaluable contributions to political debates and conceptual discussions around friendship and care as a key aspect of LGBTQ everyday life. Unveiling the richness of the blurred spaces of intimacy, the ways in which LGBTQ people produce alternatives to family-based forms of cohabitation are also of critical importance. LGBTQ lived experiences further contribute to destabilizing the family/friends and public/private binaries, whilst challenging heterocisnormative expectations about who legitimately belongs to the intimate sphere and who remains excluded and/or invisible.

Thinking environments in the humanties and social sciences

    No country for anthropologists?

Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East

Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.

Of the visible and invisible in the manufacture of the city and urban studies

    Epistemological and critical perspectives

Difference, diversity, diffraction: confronting hegemonies and dispossessions

    10th European Feminist Research Conference

The overall theme of the conference is “Difference, Diversity, Diffraction: Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions”, which refers to a topic central to Gender Studies: the social construction of difference and inequality on the one hand, and the recognition of marginalised experiences and subject positions on the other. In the face of growing right-wing populist movements, anti-feminist and anti-queer backlash, forced migration, austerity and climate change, these concerns take on renewed relevance. The subtitle “Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions” is a call to reflect on, challenge and defy the hierarchies, subjugations and deprivations that are linked to structural differentiations and to find affirmative ways of dealing with difference , diversity and diffraction. The conference is committed to promoting a feminist anti-racist accessible space for all genders.

    Representing territories

After three conferences that have successively sought to define and lay the foundations for territorial sciences, to go beyond disciplinary frontiers and boundaries, namely through interdisciplinary collaboration, and to explore territorial social demand, the 4th CIST conference (International College of Territorial Sciences) aims at mobilising the territorial sciences to address the question of representation. The objective of the conference, which will comprise 17 sessions, is to determine the contribution of the representational approach to the analysis of territories from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view.

Doctoral study day of the History of Gender group at the Centre for Historical Research

Revealing our pedagogical practices - Genèses journal

Language, culture & media in the Mediterranean

    Genres, Taste, Scents and Colors

    Image(s) of India

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

Living and study conditions: resources and strategies of students in international mobility

An increasing number of students are experiencing mobility in the context of their studies. Whether these mobilities are long or temporary, horizontal or vertical, these students share the same characteristic, that of being students who are known as “foreign students”, or “international students”; the situations in which they find themselves are, however, varied. These periods of mobility are lived through as one-off experiences depending on the contexts which lead to the experience of mobility, and depending on the geographical origins of the students. The data we have include investigations carried out by institutions, universities, national Observatoires, etc. They look into various aspects, especially students' satisfaction with regard to their stay abroad: general satisfaction, quality of the courses, infrastructure, housing, welcome, support, etc. These are often quantitative studies which subscribe to attractive policies in order to assess the services offered to foreign students. Qualitative studies in both Europe and Canada, for example, have focused on real-life experiences by looking into the socio-economic conditions under which these international students lived during their mobility, from their living conditions in terms of housing to the cultural aspects of their integration into academic and local life. They pose this central question: do their living conditions affect the academic success and study conditions?

Interarts - mimetic hypertextuality between rewritings and allographic continuity

The last decades have seen an increase in the number of publications concerned with the theme of trans-textuality, meaning the conscious reuse of themes and subjects. A widespread practice during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, trans-textuality was interrupted during the Romantic age only to be relentlessly resumed until  becoming, today, a real trend in literature and other arts, overlapping genres and artistic expressions.
