  Crossing borders

  Existential philosophy, poetry and the visual arts in the work of Benjamin Fondane

  The aim of the colloquium is to provide a platform for debate on the interdisciplinary relation between philosophy, literature, poetry, and visual arts in Fondane’s work. As a Romanian Jewish émigré, who adopted French as his language after his exile in 1924, Benjamin Fondane offers one of the rare examples of a poet able to cross languages, cultures and genre frontiers: his work encompasses poetry, philosophy, aesthetics, theory of cinema and filmmaking, playwriting and photography.

  Teaching the reading of ancient languages - specific problems and possible answers

  Quel enseignant de langue ancienne, du secondaire à l’enseignement supérieur, n’est pas confronté à la difficulté de faire lire à ses élèves ou étudiants des textes latins et grecs en langue originale ? En nous fixant des cadres méthodologiques qui respectent les niveaux d’apprentissage et les spécificités de la langue-source (latin ou grec), mais qui envisagent aussi la structuration inter-niveaux de l’apprentissage, du collège à l’enseignement supérieur, nous réfléchirons aux modalités d’enseignement permettant d’amener les apprenants à développer un contact authentique avec les textes, qui soit formateur et efficace, afin qu’ils deviennent des lecteurs confiants et autonomes, capables de comprendre le sens d’un texte et d’en percevoir la richesse littéraire comme l’importance culturelle, sans nécessairement passer par l’étape de la traduction.

  Writings from hidden women

  Le but de ce colloque est de rendre hommage à la contribution littéraire et critique de Assia Djebar, première écrivaine du Maghreb à être reçue à l’Académie Française (en 2005), sans pour autant se limiter à l’univers postcolonial franco-algérien. Si Assia Djebar remarque à juste titre que la parole féminine revendicatrice fut traditionnellement bâillonnée chez ses compatriotes, cette pratique de musellement transcende largement l’espace oriental. Car, en dépit des progrès vers l’égalité des sexes et les acquis avérés de la parité, même dans l’Occident du XXI^e siècle l’expression féminine non conforme au ton de délabrement et du sentimentalisme considéré décent pour le « sexe faible » est susceptible d’être passée sous silence.

  Sous l'Ancien Régime, l'éloge du pouvoir se déploie de manière privilégiée dans les marges des textes, des images et des spectacles : prologues, dédicaces, textes introductifs, privilèges, clés, etc. Ces textes disent la gloire du roi, de sa famille ou des grandes figures de pouvoir, offrent le livre à un puissant, l'autorisent depuis une position de pouvoir, ou programment sa lecture dans une perspective politique. Ce sont ces marges, souvent négligées, peu lues et peu commentées, que nous souhaitons prendre comme objet d'étude, à partir de l'apparent paradoxe que constitue leur investissement massif par l'écriture du pouvoir : situer le pouvoir dans les marges, est-ce marginaliser le politique ?

  Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

  In this second number, the journal will publish in its Thematic Section works about the great Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa. João Guimarães Rosa distinguishes himself  by the innovative use of language in his work. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, this issue will dedicate its Thematic Section to the theme "João Guimarães Rosa and the invention of the language from translation point of view" which will privilege unpublished papers that address the author's relationship with language from translation perspective, as well as the innovations he brought to Brazilian literature, such as the translation of his work and its repercussion in other countries.

  In 1989, a survey of French cultural taste revealed that Serge Gainsbourg was both one of the most popular singers and yet a near outcast in his native country. When he died, two years later, President Mitterrand called him “our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire,” claiming he had “elevated chanson to the level of art.” But he might just as well have acknowledged Gainsbourg as the first artist to top the British charts with a single in a foreign language. With the hindsight of almost thirty years, one thing is, in any case, certain: sampled by Beck, De La Soul, Massive Attack and Fatboy Slim, remixed by Howie B. and David Holmes, translated by Mick Harvey and covered by Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, Portishead, Madeleine Peyroux, the Pet Shop Boys and Franz Ferdinand, “the man with the cabbage head” remains the Francophone songwriter whose contribution to the international appeal of French popular music has been the most significant in the post-war era.

  2017 marque le cent cinquantenaire de la mort de Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) et le cent soixantième anniversaire de la publication – et de la condamnation – des Fleurs du mal (1857). On souhaiterait, à cette occasion, s’interroger sur la pensée de Baudelaire, non seulement dans les domaines poétique et esthétique, mais aussi dans les champs socio-politique, éthique, anthropologique et religieux.   Dans un syncrétisme qui lui est particulier, Sylvie Germain mélange les mythes gréco-romains avec les mythes chrétiens et les mythes littéraires. Son écriture « mythophore » se nuance avec chaque livre. La texture poétique se prête non seulement à une lecture mythocritique, mais à une variété d’autres lectures : thématiques, stylistiques, psychanalytiques, sociologiques, historiques, philosophiques, qui peuvent montrer comment les mythèmes amplifient les sens et les émotions.Nous convions donc les participants à se pencher sur cette partie énigmatique de toute œuvre littéraire, dont les sens ne seront jamais épuisés. Nous espérons que la rencontre de Cluj sera nourrie de ce que Sylvie Germain a si bien synthétisé : « Ce qu’un homme ne dit pas est le sel de la conversation » (Éclats de sel).

  Frantz Fanon’s Legacy in the Literature and the Arts of the Americas

  One-day conferences

  It turns out to be an epistemological necessity to analyze the scope of Fanon’s thought and style in the cultural and artistic productions of the Americas, not only because of Fanon’s concern for the creation and defense of a national culture but also because of his obvious interest for literature and the care he devoted to the process of writing. The transdisciplinary approach of the two one-day conferences « Frantz Fanon’s Legacy in the Literature and the Arts of the Americas » will encompass all the countries and areas of the Americas and the Caribbean, whatever their languages. We also welcome papers on all kinds of art, ranging from literature to cinema, painting, songs and street art (as in Bogota for instance). We warmly welcome papers that will adopt a comparative approach between different geographical areas. Papers will preferably be written in French, but English and Spanish will be accepted.

  In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

  What is Border Studies?

  2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel

  The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.
