Hamsa. Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies, nº 2

“Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2^nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

A question for geographies and geographers

The CNFG (French National Committee for Geographers) in collaboration with IGUorganizes a two-day forum to discuss the relationship between languages, social contexts ofscientific production, and the overtly admitted language of scientific exchange, that is,English. It invites all French-speaking geographers, from different “national” and “linguistic”contexts, but also all geographers and geographies interested in sharing their views andexperience on the diffusion and production of knowledge in the global context.

Knowledges, Sciences, Techniques and State building in Iberian America, 1790-1870

Over the last few decades the renewal of the history of the sciences has been marked by an opening towards non-European spaces, especially the Iberian Americas, and by the study of the relations between knowledges and power. We now have at our disposal a growing body of work on the imperial sciences, the contribution of the colonies to the advancement of knowledge, more particularly the natural sciences, and on the Enlightenment and the links between sciences, revolutions and independence in the colonial territories. However it is the opposite hypothesis that we seek to explore, highlighting both the modalities by which the legacy of the imperial, colonial Enlightenment was passed on and transformed, and the processes which meant that late 19th century Ibero-American societies, including Brazil and the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean, were ready to take full advantage of the new scientistic paradigm with a rapidity that ought to strike us as surprising.

American cities in the 21st Century : linguistic, cultural and social representations

Amerika volume 9

Volume 9 in the Amerika series will have an interdisciplinary perspective: encompassing aesthetic representations (literature, cinema, art), urbanism, sociology, anthropology and linguistics. This plural approach will enable us to establish the basis of an analysis of the new “realities” of American cities in the 21^st Century, whilst examining the paths followed by aesthetic and social representations of these new urban landscapes. The idea of devoting this volume of Amerika to the various representations of 20^th century American cities emanated from the theme of the 19th Congress of the German Association of Hispanists which took place in Munster from 20-23 March 2013. The panel, comprising 20 specialists, was organized by Sabine Schlickers and Victoria Torres.

Thinking rights in Latin America in the 20th century

This conference purports to think about the right-wing in twentieth-century Latin America. We shall seek to discover whether the current Latin American right-wing movements are merely the prolongation of XIXth century conservatism, or if a series of events might explain the emergence of new actors in the XXth century. This will enable us to enquire into which geographical scale - national or continental - is relevant when examining this concept. We expect papers from scholars in various social sciences, based on monographic and comparative historical examples. Our purpose is to historicize the concept and the object.

Antropológicas Journal

The journal Antropológicas is accepting proposals for publication in its next issue that will address the problem of ethnographic and anthropological methodology. Manuscripts should be submitted to the page http://revistas.rcaap.pt/antropologicas/login by the 28th of February of 2013. Antropológicas’ number 13th will address the problem of ethnographic and anthropological methodology, because since the academic statement of its field of knowledge, ethnographic practice and anthropological writing had many debates, both for the originality of the methodology and the scientific accuracy required by their professionals. Among social sciences, anthropology was the one where theoretical discussion about its rationale demanded a greater critical capacity, by placing into question its methodological grounds.

Empenhando-nos em ter em particular consideração a cultura de fronteira, incluiremos uma nova secção votada a pessoas de ambos os lados da fronteira que se dedicam ou dedicaram a um ofício ou atividade tradicional. Contaremos a sua história de vida e a sua relação com a sua arte ou o seu trabalho. No novo número, também haverá um dossiê etnográfico com a exposição variada da visão pictórica que pessoas de ambos os lados da fronteira têm da sua terra, da sua região.
