Public History - PhD positions
The PhD students will join the Public History as the New Citizen Science of the Past (PHACS) project hosted at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) and will work under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr Thomas Cauvin. Focusing on the production of history with a public perspective, public history has developed as one of the most dynamic international fields of the historical discipline. In collaboration with cultural institutions and universities all over Europe, PHACS studies, researches, but also develops, constructs and evaluates the impact of public participation, coproduction, and shared authority for history-making. Connecting digital participatory practices issued from citizen sciences and crowdsourcing to history-making, PHACS is contributing to reshaping public history methodology.

Maxim Kantor – The Future of Humanity
The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

Human Cognition in Andreï Makine’s Oeuvre
Despite being at the heart of Makine’s aesthetics, the literary depiction of human cognition has received a rather limited amount of critical attention to date (Mistreanu 2018 and 2019). The aim of the study days we are organizing is to fill this gap. We invite all the researchers interested in Makine’s work – in which we include the four novels the author has published under the pseudonym of Gabriel Osmonde –, in the burgeoning field of cognitive literary studies (cf. Oatley 2011; Caracciolo and Bernini 2013; Jaén and Simon 2013; Calabrese and Ballerio 2014; Zunshine 2015; Garratt 2016; Lavocat 2016; Cave 2016;Troscianko and Burke 2017), as well as in cognitive neuroscience and psychology, to discuss the way in which the human mind and brain are depicted in the texts of the youngest member of the Académie française.

Considering the eclecticism that defines cognitive literary studies as beneficial, we invite literary critics as well as researchers from all branches of cognitive science interested in this field to reflect together on the status, the theories, the methodologies and the challenges that cognitive literary studies are currently facing.

The unspeakable in youth literature
L’indicible, dans le dictionnaire, est ce « qui ne peut être dit, traduit par des mots, à cause de son caractère intense, étrange, extraordinaire. » L’indicible, comme l’ineffable, interroge la mise en mots de ce que l’on ne conçoit que difficilement par la pensée, tant l’émotion et l’affect submergent la perception même de l’expérience vécue. Partant de ces définitions, le choix de l’indicible comme sujet d’un cycle de conférences sur la littérature jeunesse souligne d’emblée la contradiction que nombre de penseurs et d’écrivains n’ont cessé d’essayer de démêler : comment écrire si ce n’est dire ce qui justement résiste au langage et à la parole, par défaut de mots (justes) pour l’exprimer ?

Capturing Europe in Digital Sources: New Approaches for European Integration History?
Call for Papers 15th History of European Integration Research Society (HEIRS)
Over the last decades, calls to “provincialise” the historiography of Europe have shaped the historiographical debate and led to new perspectives on the history of European integration (Patel 2018, François and Serrier, 2017). Digital approaches might offer historians the opportunity to do just that. With the digitisation of historical materials, such as the press, historians may broaden the scope of the classical source corpus in European historiography, by relying for instance on keyword search and collecting an ample range of press articles dealing with Europe, as Florian Greiner did in 2014. To provide another example, Frédéric Clavert in his project UNSURE resorted to digitally born archives of newsgroups to analyse the discussions on Europe in the 1990s-2000s, to shed light on the opposition to the European integration outside of mass media. These examples display significant efforts to meet the challenges of European integration historiography and led us to invite young researchers and PhD students to share their research using digitised/digital sources or digital tools on European integration history: How can the digitisation of sources and digital tools help face the challenge of ‘capturing Europe’?

The Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) announces a Summer School co-organised with the European University Institute (Florence) and the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (Frankfurt), to be held at the Maison Robert Schuman in Luxembourg City from 22nd to 26th June 2020. This Summer School invites to test digital tools and methods for oral history and stresses how digital oral sources contribute to narratives in European Integration History.

Naturalisation and Legitimation of Power (1300-1800)
An Attemps at a Comparative History – Part 1
Premier volet d'un programme en deux parties, cette rencontre s'intéressera à la naturalisation du pouvoir comme stratégie de légitimation en Europe (1300-1800). En jetant le voile sur la contingence de son apparition, le recours à la naturalité permettait de montrer (et non pas démontrer) le caractère incontestable et incontesté du pouvoir. Pour comprendre les ressorts de cet usage, nous analyserons des cas concrets de naturalisation du pouvoir tout en nous interrogeant sur son efficacité contre les approches contractualistes développées tant par des souverains en quête de consensus que par les démarches contestataires désireuses de mettre au jour la contingence du pouvoir institué. Cette rencontre s'intéressera également aux définitions explicites et implicites de la nature que les acteurs de l'époque partagaient et prendra en compte les imbrications multiples entre rapport à la nature, rapport à soi, rapports entre nature et culture.

Faceless evil in the popular culture of the 20th/21st centuries
La force transgressive des vilains, truands et pervers met en lumière la contingence des lois morales, sociales et politiques de la communauté qu’ils tentent de renverser, voire de supplanter violemment par des contre-modèles de vie commune. Dans quelle mesure le mal sans visage représente-t-il également un modèle politique, quand bien même il n’incarne pas distinctement un « autre » politique et/ou idéologique ? Eu égard à la diversité médiatique et esthétique de la culture populaire des XXe et XXIe siècles, qui produit une pluralité de méchant·e·s sans visage et sans identité, la question des représentations du mal non-apparent se situe nécessairement à la croisée du politique et du poétique. Nous souhaitions dès lors examiner cette double dimension poétique et politique de la non-apparence du mal dans différentes formes d’expression de la culture populaire (littérature jeunesse, Fantasy, science-fiction, horreur et polar ; films, séries, chansons, bandes dessinées, romans graphiques, jeux vidéo…).

La fin de la première guerre mondiale marque une transition dans les relations politiques, économiques, sociales et culturelles entre le Luxembourg et ses voisins dans ce que nous appelons aujourd’hui la Grande Région. Le centre de gravité politique et économique se déplace de l’Allemagne (de l’ouest) vers la France, tandis que la Belgique tente péniblement de trouver sa place dans ces réorganisations territoriales. Le colloque veut s’intéresser à ce processus de transition, en l’élargissant à une série de thématiques connexes, qui mettent en évidence le caractère international et transfrontalier de ces évolutions.

Mixed arbitral tribunals, 1919–1930
An experiment in the international adjudication of private rights
The creation of a system of Mixed Arbitral Tribunals (MATs) was a major contribution of the post-WWI peace treaties to the development of international adjudication. Numerically speaking, the 36 MATs were undoubtedly the busiest international courts of the interwar period. Taken together, they decided on more than 70,000 cases, mostly covering private rights. The MATs are similarly remarkable from a procedural point of view. First, their respective rules of procedure were so detailed that contemporaries described them as 'miniature civil procedure codes'. Second, in a departure from most other international courts and tribunals, they also allowed individuals whose rights were at stake to become involved in the proceedings before them.

Souvent ignoré, le support qui matérialise le discours est volontiers considéré comme accessoire, ou en tout cas comme moins intéressant que le discours qu’il véhicule. Pourtant, cette partie matérielle du discours constitue un élément structurant porteur de sens, et leur interdépendance reste à questionner. En quoi le choix de support, en relation avec un choix de format et le choix d’un média ou transmédia comme circuit de diffusion, influence-t-il la pratique de la citation et du discours rapporté au sens large, abordée tant du point de vue des conditions de production que de réception, en relation avec des valeurs singulières et collectives (par exemple, l’impact sociétal) et des formes de vie (celle dont témoigne, par exemple, la pratique aujourd’hui banalisée du tatouage) ?

Episteme of comparative literature
Le colloque international « Épistémè de la littérature comparée » réunira des chercheurs en littérature comparée du Luxembourg, de France, d’Allemagne et de Belgique. Au-delà de l’importance d’un lieu de rencontre scientifique européen, l’évènement sera l’occasion d’interroger le particularisme de chacun de ces pays dans leur manière de concevoir et de pratiquer la littérature comparée. L’objectif scientifique premier du colloque sera de faciliter une réflexion sur le dynamisme des phénomènes qui constituent l’objet de la littérature comparée, en ce que le corps littéraire de chaque langue est produit d’échanges interculturels. La perspective translinguistique et transfrontalière construit dès lors un espace propre à la discipline, qui confère à la pensée comparatiste une vocation au décloisonnement des problématiques, ainsi qu’à la conscience réflexive et critique.

100 years of universal suffrage in Luxembourg
2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of the introduction of universal suffrage in Luxembourg. On this occasion, the Chamber of Deputies and the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA) will organise a major exhibition on the historical background, the establishment of universal suffrage in 1919 and the consequences of the democratisation process of Luxembourg’s society. In this context, a scientific conference will be held. It will cover both the origins of the discussion on universal suffrage and the struggle surrounding its introduction in the Grand Duchy as well as its establishment in the years 1917-1919 and its effects in the following decades.
