  Town Twinning in Europe

  Concepts and Praxis of Rapprochement during the 20th Century

  Today there are almost 20,000 communal partnerships across Europe. In fact, they have become somewhat of a mass phenomenon since the 1960s. Despite this impressive development, historical research has shown little devotion to this particular form of international relations. Its detailed analysis, however, allows special insight into the participation of “common citizens” in international initiatives and international exchange in a communal setting. The goal of the conference is to depict the history of town twinning by challenging the concept and definition thereof. City partnerships have particularly developed in the context of bilateral rapprochement after the Second World War, the European Integration and the Cold War. Since the collapse of the Soviet bloc, they have also become a symbol for a Europe of civil partnership “from below”. Furthermore, they do not only play an important role in Europe and its relations with its neighbors, but through globalization, ultimately with the rest of the world.

  Bodies and minds in the Middle Ages: literature, philosophy, medicine

  Corps et esprit, ce binôme controversé à la racine même de notre conception de l’être humain a également joué un rôle central au Moyen Âge – car il est au cœur du discours théologique, philosophique, littéraire et médical de l’époque. C’est donc un sujet qui demande une approche interdisciplinaire, semblable au discours culturel médiéval, où les intellectuels avaient des compétences croisées et où les frontières des savoirs étaient bien plus perméables qu’aujourd’hui. Ce couple de concepts - corps et esprit - permettra d’aborder dans le colloque de Berlin d’autres thèmes importants et très présents dans les textes et la culture de la période médiévale, notamment la maladie d’amour, les relations entre les cinqsens, la mémoire, l’imagination et le rôle des passions et des émotions.

  Performance Philosophy and the Future of Genre: Thinking Through Tragedy and Comedy

  International symposium

  What is the relation between laughter and thought? How does suffering bring about understanding? Do some philosophies have a comic rather than a tragic vision? The contemporary fascination with how performance and philosophy overlap begs an appeal to genre studies. Tragedy and comedy can function as exemplary sites on which the tensions between theatre, philosophy and performance are played out. Bringing together performers and scholars from the fields of philosophy, literature and theater, this symposium will investigate how contrasting genres inform the relation between performance and philosophy.

  Visual Analysis with Digital Tools

  Göttingen Center for Digital Humanities (GCDH) International Summer School 2014

  The Digital Humanities enhance the methods of traditional research in the humanities through automated data acquisition and processing. Visualisations can play a central role in analysing such data. This Summer School will address a set of fundamental problems, such as requirements for scientific visualisation or visual strategies. The main goal, however, is to focus on the practical side to enable the participants to tackle specific visualisation problems in order to advance their own research. The natural sciences have a long tradition of interest in visualisation methods (just compare magazines like "Science" or "Nature" to any magazine with a humanities background). The humanities are catching up, though, and starting to apply visualisation techniques to answer their own research questions. A set of tools has emerged in recent years and has introduced a number of visualisation practices into the humanities. Charts, graphics, 3D visualisations or "Maps, Graphs, Trees" (to quote the title of a well-known recent book on the subject), should not only illustrate, but also create new knowledge. Only then can we call visualisations a true method in the Digital Humanities.

  Regional producers or global players? The internationalization of companies in the 19th and 20th centuries

  An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers.   Le colloque international fait partie d'une coopération scientifique entre la Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, les Archives centrales du land de Bade-Wurtemberg et l’Istituto di storia e teoria dell’arte e dell’architettura de l’Università della Svizzera italiana, Mendrisio. Il s'agit d'un projet de recherche et d'exposition qui porte avant tout sur l’étude de la correspondance littéraire et de l'ancien cabinet de peintures de la margrave Caroline-Louise de Bade.

  Politik und Versammlung im Frühmittelalter

  À divers égards, les assemblées ont joué un rôle important au haut Moyen Âge : non seulement les plaids généraux et les conciles, mais aussi les diverses assemblées judiciaires et les synodes diocésains ont marqué la vie des membres de l'élite politique et celle des simples gens. Le colloque entend proposer une analyse systématique de ce phénomène aux divers niveaux de la vie sociale et politique et, également, apporter une contribution à la compréhension du rôle joué par Charlemagne et par le centre de pouvoir que fut le palais d'Aix où se tinrent nombre d´assemblées. En ce qui concerne le déroulement et le retentissement desassemblées, les formes de communication jouent un rôle essentiel, qu'il s'agisse de réunions locales portant sur des questions en lien avec la vie quotidienne des populations ou qu'il s'agisse d'une occasion beaucoup plus solennelle.

  Race, classe, genre au prisme de l'ethnographie

  Les journée d'études franco-allemandes « Minorisations en actes : Race, classe, genre au prisme de l'ethnographie » qui se tiendront les 26 et 27 juin prochain au Centre Marc Bloch (Berlin) s'attacheront à analyser la manière dont l’ethnographie permet de saisir l'articulation diversifée de la race, de la classe et du genre dans les rapports de pouvoir contemporains. Par ailleurs, si la réflexion sur l’importation d’outils d’analyse produits dans un contexte social et politique différent – celui des Etats-Unis – a largement contribué à développer les recherches adoptant en France et en Allemagne une perspective intersectionnelle, le dialogue franco-allemand est resté marginal sur ces questions. L’un des enjeux principaux de ces deux journées d’études sera donc aussi d’interroger les apports théoriques potentiels d’un dialogue scientifique entre les deux pays.

  Oppositionelle Märtyrer

  Die Konstruktion und Instrumentalisierung von Märtyrern von der Antike bis ins 20. Jahrhundert

  In der bisherigen Forschungsdiskussion wurde primär die Bedeutung von Märtyrern für die Identitätsstiftung innerhalb von Gemeinschaften betont. Oppositionelle Gruppen scheinen dabei ein besonderes Bedürfnis zu haben, eigene Märtyrer zu konstruieren. Ziel der Tagung der koordinierten Projektgruppe „Martyrium und Märtyrerkult“ des Exzellenzclusters „Religion und Politik“ der Universität Münster ist es deshalb, die Formen und Funktionen dieser Märtyrerkonstruktionen anhand von Fallbeispielen von der Antike bis ins 20. Jahrhundert zu untersuchen. Insbesondere die Instrumentalisierung von oppositionellen Märtyrern soll, über die Epochen hinweg, in den Fokus genommen werden. Sowohl im politischen als auch im religiösen Kontext wurden vorhandene Märtyrer „umgenutzt“ oder neu erfunden, um sich als oppositionelle Gruppe zu stilisieren. Welche unterschiedlichen Aspekte des Martyriums in der jeweils spezifischen Oppositionssituation maßgebend waren und ob diese zu einer erfolgreichen Implementierung von Kult und einer Rezeption führten, soll in den einzelnen Vorträgen beleuchtet werden.

  L’échange

  Au quotidien, le terme d’échange est souvent employé dans de très différents contextes (échanges d’idées, échange de marchandises, échanges commerciaux, etc.). Ce terme récurrent, s'il semble familier au premier abord, se distingue par son caractère vague et générique. Son emploi dans différents domaines constitue à la fois sa force et sa faiblesse. Dans une certaine mesure, ses caractéristiques en font un objet d´étude interdisciplinaire particulièrement intéressant : A quoi pense-t-on lorsque l´on parle d’échange ? Comment se manifeste-t-il concrètement et où ses spécificités se situent-elles ? Y a-t-il une définition générale de l’échange ou existe-t-il des aspects qui ne se laissent pas réduire à un dénominateur commun ? C´est à cette problématique et aux questionnements qui en découlent qu´est dédié cet atelier interdisciplinaire de recherche franco-allemand.

  Dynamis of the image: the archaeology of possibles

  The project Dynamis of the image aims at exploring the power of images in the contemporary globalized world by focusing not on the image’s referential functions, but on its performative forces. By asking by what means images generate affects, produce events or sometimes even provoke wars, the project critically reflects on the traditionally dominant Western paradigm of image thinking which has customarily reduced images to mere signifiers or inanimate objects. On the other hand, the project points toward a more encompassing perspective on images by including non-Western, premodern oder anthropological frameworks where the image has been reflected upon not in terms of its ontology, but in terms of its efficacy.

  Images of the courtier in Northern European art, 1500-1700

  This panel will address the image of the courtier in the art and architecture of northern European court societies – Germanic countries, Flanders, United Provinces, France and England. While the subject has been widely studied in Italian art history, notably around the key figure of Baldassare Castiglione, it has been less investigated in the study of Northern European art of the Early modern period. The figure of the courtier inspired rich and often contrasting interpretations in Northern European court societies. While perpetuating traditional court culture in France and Flanders, the courtier in England and the Germanic countries embraced emerging social paradigms of the Protestant reform. In societies lacking an official court such as the United-Provinces, the figure of the courtier was largely redefined. Discussions will focus on symbolic forms of the courtier in the visual arts as well as in other disciplines to which the notion of decorum is central such as architecture and the decorative arts.
